Default how does shift solenoid b work

2002 X-Type

I have a suspect shift solenoid b. I need to understand it operation. This device has two exhaust ports and two O rings, the exhaust ports are below each ring. When testing the divice away from the vehicle one of the ports is open (constant), while the other opens when volts are applied to the device. Whithout knowing the action of the device I cannot decide if it is leaking or operating as it should.
Would any reader be able to shed any light on this.

Thanks for posting the Intro trodat,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

I have the VW 09A gearbox info. It is the JF506E but it is labeled different from the Jaguar and might help with diagnosis.

Thanks for taking the time to supply this stuff, I will without doubt keep this stuff on file. Today I will find out if I have sorted the problem out, I have tested each and every sol with a tool I knocked up , this allows me to use varous voltages and air test at the same time I find that a duty sol is defective. Will replace today and fingers cross. This was the last one I checked as this was the newest of all the sols, apart from shift (a) a couple of days ago , turns out this did not need replacing, so now have a spare. thanks once again.

replaced the sol still not working p0733, p1647. 1647 1s lamda (02 sensor) 1647 Incorrect gear ratio

¬¬ Possible causes of OBD code P0733
- Low transmission fluid level - Dirty transmission fluid - Shift solenoids - Transmission mechanical problems - Transmission hydraulic control circuit The Error code is generally activated on detection of the following conditions: P0733 is detected when A/T cannot be shifted to the 3rd gear position even if electrical circuit is good.

its none of the above eccept for the possability of tranny mech failure and, no amber warning light on dash

any body any ideas my idea is big box of matches.

Trodat, looks like both of those codes would result in the check engine light coming on when detected on two consecutive trips. Could these be old codes? Or did you just drive the car one time since you worked on it?

Just what symptoms did you have in the first place that you were trying to address?

start engine as normal, select (d) j gate nice and smooth, (no heavy select), car pulls away as normal no slugishness (is this a word) pulls away as normal, through gear 1 , into gear 2 , (smooth change) then into 3 where I loose drive (engine revs) hence the 0733 code, GB fault now displayed, slow down the car, gears 1 and 2 still operate as normal even though the dash is displaying the amber light , I cant say if 4 is working as it never gets that far, also a 1647 code lamda/02 sensor. whats the chances of an 02 sensor affecting the gearbox. The obd codes were cleared, (mill now off) take a trip of as long as it akes to hit third, mill back on , I have noticed that when the ignition is switched on and the cpu does it check it does not detect any faults, so it must be something it is detecting when in motion. Hope this is more detailed feel free to ask specific questions if you feel I have missed anything out ..
