My 2007 X has the usual cold weather whine, and I have taken the driveshaft from a 2002 at the junkyard to evaluate it to see it I can replace the centre bearing and then swap driveshafts. I have tried greasing and it didn't quiet things down.

I'm looking at the CV joints at each end and there is noticeable play when I hold the driveshaft tube and turn the OD of the joint. Is this normal? Or is it an indication of a worn CV joint that should be replaced?

That's the one, yes. Sounds like they need to be replaced then.
