Driving Jaguar 2008 X-Type 2.0L diesel.

​​​​​​I have used my key fob perfectly ok till yesterday but when I got home my key would not lock my car. I then realised my fob wouldn't do anything, I assumed it was a dead battery so I put a new battery in.

Reset it with ignition but doesn't beep when pressing key even with a new battery so tried my spare key with a nice new battery as well did the ignition pairing of key. But still no beep when pairing key. The car beeps but no second beep when pressing key fob so I know have no remote central locking.

Anybody know how to fix this problem?

These keys are getting old and things go wrong.

1. Dead battery, you replaced that.

2. The buttons are rubber covers that go over very small switches.
These switches are soldered to a circuit board. This solder joint
can break. If you look closely you can see if they are broken.
If you are really adept at soldering you can repair the break.

3. Corrosion. This key fob has had a hard life: the damp dirty
environment in your pocket. If you look at the switches you
might see some green goo on them. If so, then the switch is
probably bad. Some people replace them but you must be
really good at soldering.

4. Bad chip. Hey, even silicon can fail!

I have had some luck with buying used fobs on ebay but your
luck may vary.

I've never posted in the X-type section or read it much, which must be a tribute to the reliability of my X-type and perhaps X-types in general.

After being away for three weeks, neither key fob of my X-type worked. Both fobs and the car have fairly new batteries. I opened the driver's door using the manual lock. Put the key in the ignition and I was very surprised that I could start the engine as usual. I let the engine run for a couple of minutes. After that, both fobs were back to normal operation. I'm baffled as to what the problem is or was and would like to hear some suggestions. Thanks.

There is a little flap that closes over the ignition barrel key hole as you pull the key out. This is part of the security system and if it is not closed sufficiently can cause the problem you describe. Try lubricating it and working the key in and out a few times, might sort it.

 

That's something that I didn't know and an ace idea. I'll definitely apply some oil. Many thanks.

 

I'd suggest WD-40 as it leaves no residue.
Do all of your door latches and locks while you're at it.
