Default Looking to upgrade

Hi All,

I have decided the time has come where I want a little more than the X-Type (still keeping the X). Have decided to look in to XKR's as there have been a couple around for a little under $35k. Does anyone know if a 2007 xkr with 50k miles is a reliable car to get? I know this would be better suited in the xk forum but wanted to see the opinion of my fellow x-typer's first.

Thanks in advance.

04Xtype, the thing to keep in mind is is the 2009 and older cars still have the 4.2L motor which is subject to the periodic replacement of the timing chains and tensioners. They recommend changing them at like 50-70K miles. While not a hard job to do, it does take a fair amount of time or cost for someone else to do it. If you can, spend a little more and get a 2010 with the 5.0L motor (proven very reliable). You might have to go down to the standard XK, but that is going to have about the same power as the older XKR.

I have been looking at getting a 2010-2011 XFR. That can be had for around $40K with very few miles on the car in my area. But, I am also looking at the XK just to have something a bit more exclusive and possibly with a rag top.

The earlier 4.0L had plastic timing chain slippers that would break with age. The 4.2l is a full metal system and doesn't have this problem and I've never heard of someone needing to change the timing chain on a 4.2.

My 03 XKR (4.2l) has 80k miles without any of those problems plus I have a twin screw supercharger and am making I the neighborhood of 500hp with 20lbs of boost so it is a solid platform.

The 2007+ 4.2l XKRs got VVT and a small bump in stock power to I think 420. As stated, the 5.0l is also quite a good motor and can be software upgraded to XKRS power levels if that is your game. The only bad thing I've heard is that there have been some water pump failures on the early ones.

Reliability is pretty good on Jags in general these days and it is more about how they are treated and maintained. If you can find one with a documented service history, that is always the best way. If not, then it makes a good negotiation tactic.

There is NO WAY the 4.2 needs such things changing at less than about 100-150K miles, if then. (But change if you like.)

I've sold my X Type but kept my '97 XK8. The key to reliability is maintenance. This is true for any car. I've been driving my new to me 2000 Saab 9 3 to sort it out for the past month. I took the XK8 out to run some errands. I truly enjoy driving it.

It might be worth your while getting some XK Forum advice on corrosion problems. Although of all aluminium alloy construction, it's been suggested that there have been some localised cases of disimilar metal corrosion between the main alloy structure and the steel pop rivets that are widely used in conjunction with adhesive to hold some of the bodywork together. This was with early models only (so far?) and some changes have been made to later MYs.

Also crevice corrosion problems have occurred in some X350 saloons.

This link covered some of the discussion.

Thanks for all the responses. Got some key information I would not have thought about and rushed into something that could potentially require some work. Going to look in to a newer one to see if it is financially feasible. A convertible might be an option too.
