Hi forum -

I notice little if any bearing noise when I first start driving in the morning, but the noise is there once the car is warmed up, most especially on hot days or in traffic. If it is the bearing shouldn't the noise be there always?

My mechanic regressed the bearing once, with little effect. I will try and do it myself this time, before taking more aggressive steps.

NEXT STEP: Gophat mentioned having to removing the cover to drill a small hole, as his 2002 (same year as mine) wouldn't actually let you grease the bearing without doing so. If I find the same to be true for my car, is this cover easy to get off - can it be removed without removing the prop shaft?

Jag4, if I remember right, there are 2 bolts that hold the strap in place. It goes over the prop shaft bearing. Then you can use a small drill bit to drill the hole to allow injecting the grease. You may also find it best to get all 4 tires off of the ground. This will allow you to put the car in neutral and roll the rear driveshaft. What you will probably want to do is grease the bearing, turn the rear driveshaft 1/2 turn, grease, turn 1/2 turn, grease, 1/2 turn and grease a 4th time. This will get you grease in 4 spots around the bearing at about 90 degree increments. Remember, the bearings move at half the speed the shaft does. Once the greasing is done, then you can put the strap back on and bolt down.

 

I found this link in an old posting. Member said this was the bearing if anyone wanted to just replace that. From USA Bearing and Belts if you want to contact first to verify.

I dropped the whole bearing quite easily and rotated it to grease it with the grease needle. Tip: use a flexi hose on the grease gun and the still shaft can break the delicate needle, like I did...

I tried the grease needle trick and it worked for a few days so I’m looking to replace the bearing now but can’t find one in NZ?

Having done the grease needle trick the whining went away for a few days then came back. I tried to find a replacement bearing here in NZ which would include the housing but no luck. There are a few agents out there wanting to sell be a complete secondhand prop shaft (just like the one I’ve got! probably with a worm bearing too) for a unethical amount of money.
So I decided to try a different grease and have another go. I had used high temperature grease for some reason. Thinking on I decided to use a heavy duty grease that was stickier. It’s worked well, a week later and a few very cold nights, it’s not returned… but never say never.
Anyway, it may be the change of grease (blue to red!) or that I really gave it a good number of injections but I happy for now and listening for the 37kph band. Btw I tried moving the strap forward and backwards in the slots and it made differed noises at slightly different speeds. I also put in 20mm spacers to drop the angle slightly but to no avail.
Hope this helps anyone out there? I’ll be ordering one from overseas if it comes back methinks.

 

Update. The fix lasted a week and has come back. I see that the Jaguar parts place show all one assembly and not the bearing and housing separately. I can get a secondhand prop shaft for $500 but I think that will only give me a secondhand bearing that could be troublesome in the future so I’ll probably get a new bearing shipped over from the States at a. Eye watering $250…

 

The shipping is $250? The bearing is $60.

 

Hmmm....that one has me scratching my head too.
I know freight is a b*tch at the moment but just looking on eBay, most sellers from USA offering the bearing assembly to international buyers are using the Global Shipping process and only charging $23 USD which is about $33 NZD.

I wonder if Bryan's seller is using DHL or FedEx..... which basically costs you your 'first born' to NZ. Either that or he is actually bringing in the whole drive shaft assembly, not just the bearing.
That shipping cost would nearly get me my new front shocks and springs!
