Default new (to me) 2002 x type

Hello all,

Yesterday I went with my father in law to a "dealer only" auction and picked up a 2002 2.5 x-type for $6200. It has almost every option and has 71,000 miles. After buying it I did some research and found that A LOT of these cars have transmission problems early on in their lives. Is there any way to tell if a new trans was already put into this vehicle? Where the replacement trans an uprated version or just the same problematic trans that go bad early?

Also, what should I look for and what should i do as far as service as this is new to me and have never ouwned a Jag before. The car rides/drives like a dream and shifts (automatic) perfectly.

Any advise would be graetly appreciated.

Thank you all so much in advance.

Cheers,

Don

Hi Don and welcome to the forum.
If you email Jaguar customer serviceswith the last 7 digits of your chassis number they will give you a list of features of your car and what recalls etc have been done (or you could try asking your dealer).
You have bought your car just in time for the 70k service which is the BIG one (ie removing manifolds) to change spark plugs.
There is a pic of the service sheet for the X Type so you can see what gets done at each service in the 'X TYPE FAQ QUICK LINKS'link at the top of the X Type section. Then go down the list and click on 'maintenance-sheet-log-x-type' to see the service sheet used by dealers.
Hope this helps

Thank you so much BuckMR2!

Do you know where I could find the chassis #? Is it under the hood or under the car? Also, do you know Jag's cust serv email address? Thanks again! I have a feeling I will become VERY addicted to these forums as I have already read 13 pages today in these forums.

I hope next time you do research before purchasing a car, but your car seems like its in good shape. In the end, take care of the car and the car will take care of you.

Welcome to the site.

htkenan;
I hear what yer sayin' dood. But have you EVER bought a car at an auction that you had time to research before buying?
Have you ever bougth a car at auction?
It's not like Ebay, where you can hem and haw for 7 days.....
I'd say he did EXTREMELY well.
So far, this is the only deal I've heard of on one of these that seems better than my own. I bought mine without researching as well, and paid $6k for it. But mine had 106k miles on it. (but it had a new trans and t-case)

Thank you all! I called Jag today and they told me that in order to get the full service history, I would have to visit a dealer ($$$). They did however tell me that there were no open recalls and the car has had its 10 20 30 and 40k mile maintainence(sp?). Since the car has 71k I was a bit worried until she told me that the info she can see is only warrantee work. SO, I need to visit the dealer and find out if this car had its 50 60 and (wishfull thinking, I know) 70 k service.

Thank McJaguar for the support. People who have never been to dealer only (or any type) auction really have no idea how fast these cars come through.

Well, so far so good. It runs like a dream and I dont hear any wierd noises or feel any hesitation in the trans.

One thing that did bother me was that the car came without an owners manual and I have no idea how much or what kind of oil to use. I figure changing the oil will give me peace of mind and an excuse to crawl under the car to check for leaks.

Does anyone know if the car uses dino or synthetic? How many quarts? what type of filter (can I find a filter @ napa or only through Jag?)?

TY everyone for the warm welcome!

Default Haunted Radio.

My 02 x radio is acting up. On for about 20 mins then off, go over a bump, goes off for a while and comes back on!!. Loose ground wire?, loose speaker connection?, its almost like something getting to hot in there so it goes off to cool down and then on again for a while. Any idea's?.

Castrol Syntec? I read the service manual (thanks A TON) and it only mentions oil capacity (6.1 qrts). I have read more than a few places that these cars run on dino oil and not synthetic. After my innitial post I found another jag forum which expressed this clearly. Is up to the driver? What does Jag recommend???? Also, What a bout the filter? Can I get one @ any big box auto store (advanced auto, autozone, napa, etc)???

Thaose are my biggest questios What type of oil and what type/availability of filter.

Other than that, are there any gaskets I should replace? We should definatley have a write-up on basic things like these. If there is already a write up, then by all means flame away!

Thanks guys,
DC

OK, thanks to jim 64s link, which I now have printed, three hole punched, trimmed, and put into 8x10 3 ring binder thus having the complete owners manual, I found 5w30 by Castrol is the preffered oil. Now, I assume they mean regular oil. I saw no mention of synthetic on those few pages (around section7-4). I think I am going to use castrrol gtx 5w-30 and whatever filter Napa tells me (for some reason I trust them more than Advanced Auto ).

Anyway if anyone would like to jump in as to what type of/ where can I get/ oil filter that would be awsome. And please, dont be bashful about challenging what the manual says. I have been SAAB fanatic for a while and currently own an 07 9-3 (GREAT car unreal reliabilty knock on wood and HEY, THEYRE STILL MADE IN SWEEDEN LOL!). and there are some pretty heatedalbeit, high-brow-heateddiscussions on those forums over oil, viscousities, oil change frequancy, filters ad nauseum so I understand if no one wants to discuss

Blazinskunk, send me your chassis and area you are in (US?) and I will get your car specs and options list off the EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue).
Here is a link to the oils used inyour car(I use Castrol 5w-30 magnetex engine oil as do most dealers here in UK).
Dont use the enter vehicle reg feature as I think its UK only, instead look up your oil by model:-
http://www.castrol.com/castrol/ifram...tentId=7044829
Jaguar emailed me this about synthetics vs semi synthetics when I queried the out of date handbbok:-

Thank you for contacting Jaguar Cars

Further to your enquiry.

Having been advised by our Technical Team the reasons for not using fully
synthetic oil is that years ago
fully synthetic oil would cause damage to the oil seals. This is no longer
the case,
mixing semi and fully synthetic oil will not cause any damage.
We do not recommend Semi or Fully. Both are equally as good as each other.

Thank you once again for contacting Jaguar Cars.
If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact
us on freephone 0800 70 80 60, or by email on information@jaguar.co.uk.
Our customer information centre is open 8am-8pm Monday to Friday, 9am-6pm
Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sundays.
Yours sincerely

1. I also have an 07 9-3 and have similar feelings. The Saabnet is a great resource. I've been a member for over 10 years as it has helped with my disease (Saabonucleosis). Have owned 4 900 turbos, 2 900 S's, 2 9000 Aero's, and a 99EMS. Probably going to grab an SPG this summer.

2. Welcome to the X type world.

3. Does "blazinskunk" mean what I think it means?
