I don't have a Jag dealer here, so I found a mechanic I trust. I take the oil and filter to him for the change and he takes a good look around my X, to make nothing big gets started.

 

Or, you could just go to Wal-Mart and get a Motorcraft FL-400S filter and 7 qts. of 5w-30. You didn't say what engine is in your car but my 3.0 takes 6.8 qts. The Motorcraft filter is the same one the Jag dealer uses except it says Ford on it instead of Jaguar. It's also $4 instead of $11.
You need a 13mm wrench or socket for the drain plug. It's super easy to change the oil in the X. The only thing that is a pain is that once the filter is off, oil comes out on the exhaust. That is solved by sticking a diaper, yes a diaper, in between the filter and the exhaust pipe before removing it.

Your motor does not require any special oil that can only be gotten at the Jaguar dealership. As long as you stick with a major brand name (Valvoline, Mobil 1, Halvoline, Quaker State, etc), you will be just fine. The big thing is to use 5W-30 oil in your car and fill it to the proper levels. As for the argument over using synthetic, synthetic blends, or standard motor oils, I will leave that up to you. You will get 20 different stories as to why synthetic is better than dino oil, dino oil is better than synthetic, etc, etc, etc. The big thing I would recommend is using a shop that will stand behind their oil changes so should something go wrong, you are covered. I personally change my own oil so I have no one to blame but myself. Been doing that for over a year on my Jag and 20+ years on my vehicles. No problems.

 

Would a rag not suffice? I find it funny you use a diaper.

 

Probably because oil can still get through the rag. I actually like the diaper idea, I hate when all that oil gets on my exhaust. Just my personal preference but I use Mobil 1 synthetic and either a K&N or Mobil 1 oil filter.

Try it one time with a diaper and you won't want to use a rag again.

I just wrap the exhaust under the filter with a piece of aluminum foil. Once the new filter is in place, wipe the area with some paper towels and remove the foil. Simple.
