Default Oil Pan Gasket

If anyone has a dripping oil pan, the gasket is most likely blown. From what I hear, this is a common problem among the X-Types. Be prepared, if you have the 2.5 it is an 8 hour job. If it is a 3.0 it is only a 3 hour job. Unfortunately I have the 2.5. Definitely was not expecting to pay so much money for what seems like, what should be, such a simple job.
On a side note, the mechanic the looked at my car told me my X was AWD. I told him that I didn't think it was, and that I see Xs with the AWD badge so why wouldn't they all? Does anyone have any info on this?

Two things... First unless there was an option in europe which i don't believe there was, ALL X-Types have all time AWD. Second the oil pan gasket is an 8+ hr job regardless of your motor being 2.5l or 3.0l. It's a pain in the a$$ for both and expensive if done by the dealer because of the labor involved.

The program they used said that the 3.0 was only a 3 hour job. I dind't have it done at a dealer btw.

What is so difficult about the oil pan gasket? I think I have a slight leak out of mine and that is the problem. Normally that would be a easy fix... Could someone fill me in on the details of what I have to expect?
Thanks!

The transfer case must be removed to get to all of the oil pan gasket bolts.

That being said, user "BRUTAL" says there are some "tricks" that can be done to get the job time down. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=10397

Not sure what those tricks are. Dealer replaced mine under warranty and was 9.5hrs of labor.

The AC condenser has to be removed as well. When I initially knew it needed to be done I thought it would be this super simple job, boy was I wrong.

I just had my car oiled sprayed and it is still dripping. Is there someplace in particular you should check to see if your gasket is leaking? My Warranty expires in a month and I would like to check this before it does.

I got my x-type a month ago (2.1). Oilpan gasket was leaking badly. Got a local garage to do it as a 6 hour job at 70% of the jag dealer hourly rate (Jag dealer was 8.5 hour job) so it was basically half the price.

The only way to satisfy yourself that it is the oilpan gasket is to get under the front and wipe all the oil off the oil pan (big flat box - lowest part of the engine - will be the thing all covered in oil!) and as far up as you can around it, then you can see the oil leaking out if you leave it for a few hours.

If it is under warranty just take it in there and say that it is the gasket. If it isn't they'll tell you what it is and most likely fix it. But it probably is the gasket.

i noticed a small oil leak on my driveway a week after I purchased my '03. I took it back to the place I got it from, and they were like yea we will take care of it, dont worry. Little did they realize the job it would be to change it, I get a call from them saying "Wow, this is a way bigger job than we expected!" I'm like yea, that's why I had you guys do it cause I don't want to get it fixed later. Glad I noticed it so quick, this way it's free instead of the $1150 the dealer quoted me.

6 hours, let em do it for that. The only way theyll make money is to bore a 3/4" hole through the transfere case. And then youll have to pay a core fee if your transfere case ever goes out because the rebuilders wont take them.
6 hours is less than warranty and book time is 9.3
no you do not have to remove the condensor who told you that?
And if you live in the "salty north" you may end up buying exhaust pieces or paying for added labor for cutting, drilling, tapping etc
i just spent an added 2 hours of my time working to get the exhaust off a newyork area car so i could drop the pan

smitty, if you can do the work yourself, they are easy cars to work on and if you know where to look, the parts are pretty cheap.

I can do most work myself I'm just lazy . My wife car has been sitting for a few weeks and I saw the oil and read the info here . So far after owning the car since Aug 26 I replaced the starter and changed the oil/filter . Things needed are front Cat , oil pan gasket , one tire , struts , control arms , stabilizer bar bushings and now it has a rear lighting problem . To top it all off I have to do the timing chains on my Maxima along with the Jaguar .

My Jag guy quoted me $300 to change out this gasket. Mine has a slow drip. I best get it done before he decides his quote was wrong!
