Default Oil pan sealer - when 'more is better' philosophy is used

Just bought s 2003 X-Type with what I thought was mild leak but turned out to be worse than I thought. Have turned a wrench or 2 in my day decided to give it go at changing the gasket. Knew the prior hack job looked bad and was even worse than I thought:

Hope to have it cleaned and back in in a few days.

Just wondering, how did you get the pan off? Did you remove the T-Case, drill a hole through the T-Case, or use the bent wrench approach?

You get edits after a few posts.

Anyways it's not "more is better" ... it's "too much is just enough".

Tried the bent wench method but could not the angle right plus I think the bolts where over tightened so did not think I could get enough torq on it to free so drilled it. I wasted 8 hrs or so trying to loosen the trans case and removing the front cat ( did not get either loose) to give me room to get the pan out but finally just used a couple pry bars to get it out, one on the trans case and the other on the cat. Did not have to apply much pressure. Will do some grinding on the pan which should which should give enough room to get it back in place without have to pry on it.

Took a better look at the sealer and could tell they did not remove the pan since there was no sealer around the hard to get to bolt, no wonder it was leaking so bad.

With a little grinding it went back in no problem. No more leaks or burning oil smell!

Wow, what a mess. I have never been a big fan of just RTV for gasket. Looks like it might as well not had a gasket at all, may have mated and sealed better.

The only way to do it right, is get if off and clean it right, other wise it won't seal.
