Phone buttons function(s)?
I've read some of the other threads on this but it doesn't seem entirely clear to me, since everyone says something different. If I'm thinking correctly, the little phone buttons on the stereo and steering wheel may not have any function at all. I assumed when I saw those buttons, it meant Bluetooth, but I understand you have to upgrade that yourself? Did any X-Types come equipped from the factory with Bluetooth? Otherwise there's some kind phone thingy built into the arm rest? I guess that means you'd have to sign up for some kind of service to get that phone to work and couldn't use with your existing phone.

JimC64's excellent collection, 4th file from the bottom.
Third from the top looks good too.
Seems it should have your answers.

Jaguar phones have changed over the years from Motorola StarTAC, through Motorola M8989 to Bluetooth and the installations are entirely different.
Generally most models come with the phone controls on the steering wheel but very few original buyers chose to have the very costly phone equipment fitted to make use of them.

This is a classic example of why we ask members to add Model and Year details to forum Signatures.

Sorry, I don't have that information as I am not yet an owner. Currently shopping for X-Types. Being as most of them are sold by non-Jaguar dealerships, the descriptions of the phone functions have widely varied so it was unclear.
I've had a 2001 X308, a 2005 XK8 and currently have a 2007 XK, all with OE factory phone installations. The XK Bluetooth is acceptable but nowhere near as good as aftermarket alternatives. The biggest drawback with the Jaguar phone installations is the limited number of phones that can be paired.

You're unlikely to come across many, if any, fitted with an OE Jaguar telephone installation. It was hugely expensive and always years behind the times in terms of telephone technology. Two major weaknesses of Jaguar across all the models are their audio and phone performance.

Cool, thanks. That's kind of what I was thinking based on what I could piece together but wasn't sure. It's annoying to have non-functional buttons, but not a big deal.

The phone button on the steering wheel will mute the radio. The phone icon on the dash if you push it and do not have the hands free phone function will show something like "no phone" in the display. Probably 90% of the cars do not have that option installed in the early cars.
