Default Please help me diagnose this suspension problem - Video

So as some of you know, I've been having a lot of suspension noise recently so I finally decided to take a video of my car in the cabin. Hopefully this can help a little so you guys can hear what I hear instead of trying to explain it with words.

In this video I'm driving over the little road markers and it's causing this noise, which I know was not as bad when I first put the H&R springs on over a year ago.

Check out the video:

You are driving over the road turtles though. Can you go to a used car dealership and grab another X-Type with factory 18s and take that for a test drive? That is what I would do.

Is that what they are called? Road Turtles? But anyways, that does sound like a good idea. I'm just to the point where I'm so sick of this noise it drives me crazy. I just want it fixed!

Are you sure it's related to the suspension? Does it handle poorl? It sounds like a metallic rattling, like something came loose and everytime you go over the slightest bump it rattles. Can you get it on a lift and check the undercarriage? Might be something else rattling. Exhaust perhaps?

If it bothers you that much maybe take it to a dealer. For the peace of mind to get it fixed it would be well worth it. A couple hundred dollars vs. putting up with that everyday would be an easy choice for me. Good luck. Hope you can sort it out soon.

I know I would love to get it fixed! Could it be the strut mounts? It does handle poorly, when I go over bumps it feels like the car hydroplanes. Like I lose grip with the ground in a way. And I'm pretty sure it's the suspension because my ride feels like crap. Thanks for the help Alfa.

Could be. Could be a lot of things I suppose. The one certainty is that it will not get better living with it and being frustrtated. If it's handling as poorly as you describe it might not even be safe. Get it checked out as soon as you can, if not for your safety, for your peace of mind. How long has it been like that?

I know thats why I'm trying to tackle this problem asap. I'm big on safety so it's important for me to have a safe car to be in. I'm going to take it in to a shop where I live as soon as I can. I can say its been this bad for about a month when I hit a pot hole. Since then it's been this constant noise everywhere I go. I even lowered my air pressure to 32 psi to see if that would help and nothing.

it could be so many things, ive had a 3 series that sounded like that from a bad control arm bushing, another car had worn out spring isolators, the rubber peices ususally wrapped aroung the spring or seated on the lower spring perch, bad strut mounts, take it to shop is what i recommend

I took it to a Jaguar/Range Rover shop in my area and they told me that the car is in need of new shocks and struts and some rubber piece which is torn. This noise better be gone after I get this replaced!

its sounds plausible to me, the rubber piece is most like the strut boot which prevents debris from accumulating around the the strut rod which in turn can cause strut failure due to fluid leaking from the strut rod seals. bad struts are known to make a hard sound like that in the video and cause a harsh ride from hitting the bump stops if the fluid in the strut has leaked out.

No it wasn't the strut boot. I think it was the spring seat or something along those lines. Thanks so much for the help by the way.

Sound slike it will cost a few bucks, but look on the bright side. Once that is fixed I bet it will feel like a new car and you will fall in love with her all over again. Good luck!

I'm thinking of actually going with the KW coilover kit because I fear that the OEM sport shocks still won't be able to handle the drop and I'll be in this situation all over again in about 15,000 miles. What do you guys think?

sounds like the struts might be pooched, when you did the springs did you check the struts? I had an old TR7 that sounded like that and the struts were almost resting on the bump stops, when I pulled them there was nothing there, the things had no resistance. once replaced along with the mounting flange thing at the top it was like a new car. The struts are what keeps the wheels planted

its hard to tell, but it sounds like either shocks or sway bar links and possibly tie rod ends if you have any slack and rattle in the steering.

My guy over at the shock is positive it's the shocks and struts. He said the back ones are completely shot and the front ones are pretty dang close. The comfort shocks are just not capable of handling the H&R shocks. I think the KW coil over kit is my best bet. Also he said I'll need new shock tower mounts as well, one of mine is torn. Any thoughts?
