Default PO420

im my quest to have the most unreliable X on the forum, she has not let me down again!.
the saga continues.
the other day, after #1 spark plug ejected itself (and threads) i tapped a new thread and used an insert for the spark plug.
when the plug flew....i still had to drive 15 miles home, apparently thats enough time to generate the PO420 kitty wants a joint code.

is it possible that 15 miles with one cylinder dead can kill the cat (ylitic converter)

any known fixes for this?
im in the process of using "cataclean" product but im not too hopeful.

is it possible that changing bank 1 02 sensors will do it?

i should add that this is not uncommon.... my inspection (MOT) is due in several days and just about every year, every vehicle ive owned throws a check engine light....its me.... not the kitty!....a decade of check engine lights....AAAGGGHHHH

O2 Simulators
use a 02 extender in the downstream sensor so its not so sensitive. And yes your cylinder down (misfire/rich) etc is the number one reason cats are killed.

thanks brutal

i can understand critical damage being caused by a dead cylinder not being repaired as many people do...but 15 miles?

ive read some people had luck by changing the upstream sensor....some even used an old used sensor with success.

i have an old sensor so i'll try that, if that doesnt work ill try a new sensor

if that doesnt work i'll try the extender.

if that doesnt work im gonna buy a catskin wallet!

If the threashold is for a cat to clean the exhaust stream at least 90% lets say and you are at 91% yeah that can do it

I am guessing the P0420 code came on while you were driving home and the MIL is still on. After you did the repairs did you try and clear the code and it still came back or you did the repairs and the light did not go out? If it is the latter try clearing it with a code reader or else if teh problem is solved maybe you just didn't reach the proper amount of drive cycles for it to extinguish itself.

the 7/8 oxygen sensor socket is a sloppy fit on the sensor, is there a different size sensor socket?
i cant cut the wire and use a socket as im re-using the sensor

Idk of one without cutting the wires, then using a SIX point socket. In reading most people with problems getting them out use pb blaster first (not WD 40 = flammable), let it sit then heat the surrounding area with a torch to help expand the hole where the plug goes in.

i have the offset style and its stamped 7/8 22mm
the parts car 02 sensor came out pretty easy.
my car of course just rounded a corner.
they have both been soaking in pb plaster overnight.
at least....i think i did my car last night too but i know i did the parts car.
so i'll spray some more and try again tmrw, although if HD has that in stock i may run down and get it
thanks for the links

the ebay set in the specs are the same as mine, they all say 7/8-22mm
why is this so stupid...why dont they make a correctly fitting socket?
the HD is order only, i'll run to advance auto and see if tney have a loaner kit.
also i think wrapping something like tape around the hex will take up the extra slop in the socket

Uuummm, cuz we live in the U.S.? Wth is a metric anyway?

Yeah, electrical type tape works wonders sometimes. On the ranch we could fix dang near anything with pliers, bailing wire, duct tape......

Oh yeah.....and a big fkn hammer. :-) :-) :-)

either metric or sae...i dont get why an 02 socket isnt made to fit snug....i mean its bad enough that the sensors weld themselves in anyway....i have never enjoyed even the thought of removing an oxy sensor.
anywaysssss....i went to advance and they had the 3 piece kit in their loaner tools, so i picked that up and we'll resume play tomorrow.

yesssss
i just tried the sensor i removed from the parts car in 2 of the sockets and they are both a tighter fit.
the 3rd socket is the same as mine which is also a 1/2" drive (which i d prefer for the others but this looks good ;@)

All the ones I've met are snug.

That will be because almost all the world uses metric sizes and that's what the sensors are too.

If you carefully compare sizes in both imperial and metric some are quite similar - just enough to be useful on occasions but too loose on others. Use the "wrong" ones wisely.

(more?) overnight soaking and using the tightest fitting of the 4 oxy sensor sockets broke the 02 sensor free.
used a 1/2" adaptor on the socket with a 1/2" ratchet. it came out hard but i did not need an extra leverage pipe.
pic shows the damage done by the first socket.
