Unhappy Replaced steering column and ignition, help!

(2002 X-Type 3.0)

My old ignition and key were shot, so I bought a whole new steering column, ignition, and key. When I connect the battery the alarm goes off and it doesn't matter what I do with the key.

If the alarm was going off before I switched the ignition, will I need to put the old ignition back in and turn off the alarm?

Any info would help, thanks.
(I know I probably sound like an idiot hah, kind of a big project for someone like me to take on)

Hi Ian, if you have changed the lock and the key then you need to program the key to the car using JLR/SDD.

Very new to these programmable keys, could you link me to a wiki or a forum page (if allowed) that could clarify? Thanks for the nudge in the right direction

I have just re read your post and if you have changed the whole column then the PATS connector around the Ignition switch will not match your vehicles ECM module. So you will need to transfer that over from your old column.
If you do not have the use of JLR/SDD then you will have to get either a Dealer or a Key specialist to program the keys chip.

Thanks so much, any idea what reprogramming costs? Also the PATS is around the front if the ignition cylinder correct? If that's the case do I need to transfer the black piece that connects to the back of the cylinder?

Not quite sure what you mean. The PATS receiver is clamped round the Barrel and that is all that needs transferring.
The black bit at the back of the barrel connects with the ignition switch and remains.

I do not know how much it will be in USA but in UK is from £60 but I have the JLR/SDD so do it myself.

While I have ya here, can you tell me where this plugs into? I can't find where this piece of the harness plugs into...

It's the shortest bit in the harness if that helps. Thanks again.

That plugs into the PATS system around the barrel

Figured it out, but thanks yet again Roger. So I've hit this predicament, I put all the old column in, and plugged in the battery, the alarm went off, tried to start it but the alarm kept going. So now no matter what steering column/ignition is in the alarm just keeps going, any ideas on why or how to fix it.

The alarm is set and disarmed when locking and unlocking the car.
If the old fob still works it should do the trick.
The Ignition key chip unlocks the ECM to allow the vehicle to start but if the alarm is sounding this will not happen.

No fob on old key, it's just the key, and turning the ignition won't stop the alarm.
