Is it a requirement to flash/erase the TCM when replacing the tranmission?
I will soon be replacing the destroyed transmission in my 2002 X-Type 2.5L Automatic with a 2003 X-Type 2.5L Automatic transmission.
From what I understand, and after reading some TSBs, Jaguar requires that the TCM be "cleared" or "flashed" or else the new tranmission will be eventually ruined becuase it will be operated under the learned settings of the old TCM+transmission combination.
Here's the info I'm referring to from XT307-S941 JATCO JF506E:
88. Position Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) alongside vehicle, switch Portable Test Unit (PTU) 'ON' and allow software to load.
Note: Ensure WDS is loaded with software release JTP 759/24 or later.
89. Connect PTU to vehicle using diagnostic cable.
90. Enter VIN and navigate to configuration main menu.
91. Select 'Special Applications' then 'Transmission Control Module Adaptation Clear'.
Use this opportunity to perform Service Action S937 if this has not been done previously (Refer to Technical Bulletin XT303-S937).
92. After 'Transmission Control Module Adaptation Clear' application is complete, carry out transmission fluid level check.
Does the TCM have the ability to re-adapt or re-learn the new transmission on its own, or should I absolutely not operate the vehicle with the new transmission until I've had the dealer clear the TCM's adaptation settings?
EDIT: I should add that my local Jaguar service manager didn't seem to think that this was necessary, which prompted my question here for some of the expert technicians. He personally feels that there's a chance this won't even work but from what I understand, there are no major differences between the 2002 vs. 2003 transmissions (except for perhaps better reliability).

Yes, the adaption clear needs to be done to assure you won't have another failure.
All 3.0L petrol X-Types are common transmissions. For some reason the 2.5L cars are common up to the start of the 2005 MY. '05 and later 2.5's are a different unit. I can't say why; just they are different.
Good luck!

Reprogram TCM
Will that help my 2002 3.0 xtype that I put a 2006 Motor and trans in? Motor and trans work great. Trans shifts good but no speedo and any speed related systems functioning. I picked up TCM from 2006 but the newer TCM's have a 2 plug pin out config. Can the dealer program that to match the trans? I have vin numbers and all numbers for both eng and trans. Any help appreciated
