Service
Well' its that time again....time to dig deep for the service now due.......Road tax up the end of this month so that'll be another £200[&:]
Started by calling the local *******, Taggarts of Glasgow who, reckoned the car was due for a 5th year service ( just about 5 years old but only has 24k miles on the clock ) The price was not too bad I didn't think at £310 incl of VAT.
I had taken the car to Kwik Fit to get the wheels balanced and tracking done - due to a wife that seems magnetically drawn to kerbs[&:]( the car was pulling to the left and had a steering wheel judder at around 60mph, so needed done ) Whilst the wheels were off had a good look at the pads n rotors. Pads seemed ok, but rotors looked on their last legs!
Back to the servicing theme - Having got the price from the dealers I decided to look around and do some checking.
I found the following.
Buying the parts from the dealer wasn't too bad as seen below -
Oil filter - £6.46
Pollen filter - £13.51
Air filter - £12.34
Sump plug n washer - £3.82
Total - £36.13
Called around to check on oil and found that Halfords was the best I could come up with on short notice.........It had to be Castrol Magnatec 5w/30 and was priced at
2 x 4ltr Castrol Magnatec 5w/30 - £26.99each
Total - £53.98
Checked around and came up with Brakes4u.co.uk ltd for the pads, which are gonna be of the EBC Redstuff varietyat long last
Front EBC Redstuff - DP31322 - £57.73
Rear EBC Redstuff - DP31350 - £43.51
Total - £101.30 delivered
Then I called my local mechanic who has worked on quite a few of my cars in the past as well as friends n family. He does a good job, is trustworthy and pretty reliable too, so its all good.
Quote for service incl fitting pads
Total - £80 approx
All in price for the service and fitting of pads all round is
£271.41
Needless to say I am a happy bunny as essentially I am getting my pads supplied n fitted for free as against just the service from the dealer
As a footnote -
Having driven the car earlier tonight and " giving it some " I noticed under fairly heavy braking a slight judder thru the pedal.
I'm not sure if this is down to the wheel thats kerbed, which when balanced was slightly egg shaped...[&:][&:]
There's still a slight judder thru the wheel when driving, although much less than before, but, basically the wheel needs replaced as soon as possible.
I've also decided that it makes sense to do the discs / rotors as they arequite worn, when doing the pads.
I checked again with Brakes4u.co.uk who can supply the EBC discs plain or slotted.
Decided on the plain discs to keep the cost down as follows
Front EBC discs - D981 - £71.79 pair
Rear EBC discs - D1050 - £49.73 pair
Total £121.52
As well as the extra labour which I estimate at around £40 - £50 giving a total of £432.93 OUCH!! but not bad all at the same time....lol
Now all I gotta do is find one or maybe even two 17" Sport alloys on Ebay or somewhere. One to replace the badly kerbed wheel, and one for a full size spare that will allow me to refurb them all AGAIN!!.........Damn women drivers!...lol

RE: Service
Jim, if youre buying your brakes compare the price from www.ebcbrakesdirect.comand enter scooby58 in at the checkout to get a good discount and free UK shipping before you buy from brakes4u.
I got mine from them using the voucher code that I found when searching the net for a discount code and ended up finding it on a Subaru forum.

I woulda saved around £7 I think roughly havin checked it out. Don't get me wrong £7 is £7 an all that, but time is the issue as I am getting the work done on Saturday am, so parts must be here.
No ifs and or buts....lol
I could probably save another £5 or £6 with the discs as well but the same issue applies unfortunately.
Thanks Buck

RE: Service
I 'd try a ford dealer for your oil, as I think even without m discount it is cheaper than Halford.
Re the wheels, I am looking to get rid of my car and if I do I'll be fitting an old wheel and will therefore be selling a wheel and tyre that has only been on the car a matter of weeks.

RE: Service
Rotors / discs from EBC arrived today
Really lookin forward to gettin them fitted
They look great, although I woulda preferred the slotted grooved rotors but couldn't quite justify the extra £150 at the moment.
The tax for the A6 and the X are up at the end of the month.......so thats another £380 near as dammit[&:]

RE: Service
The mechanic called me today prior to fitting and said.....
You know that these are racing ceramic pads and not really for this type of car?[&:]
I said yes.........FIT THEM!....lol
I meant to ask Buck ( in case he's reading this thread ) how long it took for his to bed in and what difference did he notice from fitting.
I'd reckon around maybe 300 miles for them to bed in properly.
Anyone any thoughts on this?

RE: Service
Bedding in time as below
Superstreet formula for cars above 200bhp and fastest street driving
This material is a Kevlar® fibre based brake compound enhanced with ceramic particles. If you have previously tried EBC redstuff (pre-ceramic compound) this material is light years ahead. It lasts longer, it brakes better and is quieter. Being a hard wearing pad, bed-in times can be as long as 1000 miles and drivers must be patient until the pad takes up the shape of their disc (brake rotor).
This is a truly impressive fast road pad for repeated heavy braking. It emits far less dust than semi-metallic pads and has been proven to stop a passenger car/sedan/sport compact/hot hatch 13 metres quicker than OEM pads from 100mph/160kph. Features EBC Brake-In surface coating which conditions rotor surface and accelerates pad bed-in. Nominal friction coefficient 0.5 with approx. 50% dust reduction compared to other pads.

RE: Service
Man, how pleased am I?
I got a call tonight from my wife on her way to work. She travels on the M8 into Glasgow just at the tailend of rushour, so its pretty busy n stop start drivin.
Anyway, she calls me to tell me specifically just how good these brakes are
She's a very careful ( see further comments below...lol )driver and doesnt drive fast or brake hard and she's noticed!!!
This from the woman that could be drivin around with a more or less flat tyre and not feel the difference...How do they do that?
This from the woman that doesn't know how or when or why to fill up her screenwash.....I gotta do it for her[&:]
This form the woman that is drawn to kerbs for some reason[&:]
It tells a story boys.......Redstuff rocks!!!!
