Stereo help please
The stereo wont turn on. It just quit working and the fuse checks out good.
Where do I start and how do I remove it if necessary? The car is a 2003 X-type 2.5L. the stereo I think is abase model it doesnt have a trunk unit for CD playing but it does have the in dash CD unit. Please someone help diagnose my problem.

Dan,
first off I am assuming you do not have NAv fitted as you state it is a base model.
check fuses F43 and F44 if good then
what i would do is remove the unit from the car grab yourself a multi-meter
switch it to the DC range 20V
Place the black lead to ground if you look in the hole the unit was you will see 4-5 black wires connected to a bolt on the drivers side.
the red lead place on the Yellow/Green wire in pin 2 on the plug you removed from the back of the unit do you have 11-13V with the ignition on (engine will not start with radio removed) This is fuse F43 10A
and also the Brown/White wire in pin 11 this is the constant power F44 15A
also check your ground that is the black wire in pin 1
if you have power to these then we will need to look inside your head unit to see whats going on there.

Well good news and bad i am afraid
the drawings I have are from 2004 on so i do not have the drawing for your year, mid way through 2004 our friends at Jag changed the wiring and fuse distribution.
good news the troubleshooting is the same.
do you know how to use a multimeter? if not that is ok
hopefully you have on but if not you can get one from autozone for around $20
first thing i need to ask is have you any after market electonics installed for example a phone charger connector that is directly wired?
that would be my first suggestion to check. any aftermarket wiring is always suspect.
Next we will have to remove the radio and unplug the connector in the back.
now with your meter on the Vdc 20V range hold the black lead to the body and with the blown fuse back in place hold the red lead on the metal part of the fuse that is on the top of the fuse.
one side will give you 11-13v one side will be 0V this is the side we are interested in (you will have to have your ignition on but no need to start the engine).
now with the meter connected to the 0V side of the fuse switch your meter to the ohms range if you have a continuity test that would be better this is the one where the meter beeps when you touch the red and black leads together.
now with the radio unplugged does your meter beep when you hold the red lead to the 0V side of the fuse and the Black lead to an unpainted bolt on the body or do you have a reading?
If it beeps you have a direct short to ground on the cable. check the cable from the radio to the fusebox for breakage now be careful the wires run up and over the guage cluster so you may have to remove the gauges to check the wires.
if it does not beep (or shows 1 like when the leads are not touching anything)
you are good. now plug the radio back in what does the meter do now?
if it beeps odds are you have a short in the head unit.
Let me know how it goes..
