Welcome to the forum sweppes,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

the codes are as follows:
300 random misfire
301 misfire cylinder 1
303 misfire cylinder 3
1313 misfire catalyst damage bank 1
1316 misfire exceeds emissions
1111 is all tests complete

You have misfires on cylinders 1 and 3 that is the bank closest to the radiator.
The misfire needs to be corrected before you drive very much or you will damage the catalytic converter.
Check 1 and 3 for oil around the spark plug since it came on suddenly. I you have oil clean it up and clean the spark plug and coil pack.
If no oil check the connectors to the coil pack.
Swap one of the coil packs with number 2 and see if the misfire follows the coil pack, do it with the other coil pack also. Make sure you keep track of the number 2 coil pack.
You may want to pull and clean the 1 and 3 plugs.
Lets us know what you find.

+1 to check for oil around the spark plugs of cylinders 1 & 3, which are on the firewall side, aka Bank 1 of our X-Types. #1 is by the serpentine belt, #3 is in the middle, & #5 is closest to the coolant reservoir.

On the radiator side, aka Bank 2, #2 is by the alternator, #4 is in the middle, and #6 is closest to the battery.

It's common for even veterans to get this reversed, particularly those who work on multiple makes & models.

Pictures of the cylinder numbers for our X-Type engines are in this post and the following one: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...2/#post1070336

good advice, but, the cylinders nearest the radiator are 2,4 and 6 and the cylinders closest to the firewall are 1,3 and 5. So the intake manifold will have to come off.

sweppes, I assume you have a 2.5 or a 3.0 US model. How many miles? Any service records? Help us help you with more information. Maybe update your signature to show some of this data. If there is oil in those wells, while the intake manifold is off is a good time to change the valve/cam cover gaskets and spark plugs if indicated.

Vern: I've enjoyed your (and clyon's) excellent advice in many posts, so this was just a 'brain freeze', for sure.

+1 on clyon's advise to sweppes: If sweppes plans to put many miles on the '04 X-Type, when the intake is removed to check for oil in the spark plug wells, it's minimal extra effort to check all coil boots for oil and arcing damage, replace all spark plugs, replace the upper & lower intake gaskets, and replace both valve cover gaskets encircling the spark plug wells.

sweppes: Ask if you're uncertain about removing the intake to check for oil in the spark plug wells, or about incremental maintenance that's easy while the intake is removed. E.g., allow the engine cool before removing the intake. Some folks have attempted to loosen the intake bolts while the engine is still hot, and caused brass inserts to break free in the lower intake. A cool engine minimizes this problem.

Flashing MIL = serious misfires that are causing cat damage.
