Default Thinking about buying a 2002 x-type...

So ive been doing some reading and i hear that the 2002 2.5 models have trany problems...I found this really nice x-type with only 36k miles with one owner...i talked them down to 8500 which i the good price on kbb..this was without knowing of the trany problems i discovered while searching the internet....now im alittle worried about making the step to buying this car...the thing that attracted me was the mileage but ive heard low mileage doesnt really mean that the car is in great shape...the owner has all maintence records and says it has been regularly serviced every 6 months..then i was thinking about an extended warranty but not exactly sure where to turn for that because i live in california and on warranty direct the price for coverage is so expensive...for the most expensive coverage its more then the car costs me...any suggestions here...oh and the car is a 5 speed manual and not an automatic..not sure if that makes a difference on these cars as far as dependability of the trany...any suggestions???

I would absolutely get a warranty. Jags break....There expensive cars, a jaguar should be purchased with a warranty.

Mine cost $4,100 to extend to 100K and till 2012. AndI know it is going to come in handy. I bought my 2005 jag with 40k milesa week and a half ago.

~My passenger seat motor is broken
~My passenger mirror is broken
~My high beam stalk is ....almost broken(clicks weird)
~There is condensation in my left front side marker

My blue jag had so many problems it was UN-BELIEVABLE. It seems everything electrical in my car was breaking...even the Tranny
I had to use a lawyer to get through to the dealership

i just asked the seller if they knew anything about getting an extended warranty...they told me that the car is still under factory warranty for another month...would that make it easier to get an extended warranty from the dealership??also what do you guys think it will cost me? like i said before it has 36k miles and is a 2002 x-type 2.5 5 speed manual..its just the regular 2.5 not the sport...

I have a 2002.25 3.0 X Type 5 speed manual and no problems.
I got a 1 yr warranty when I bought the car used from a non Jag dealer 3 years ago but wouldnt buy one especially....after all warranty companies are in business to make money by taking more in in premiums than they pay out.If I was worried abouta warranty for a carI wouldbank the money for the warranty each month and its there should you ever need it to put towards or pay for repairs.Chances are you will still have money left.If the worst happened there are always breakers to save if the bill was going to be high.

With all due respect bluejagg, we know your car had some issues but it sounded like the dealer tried everything they could to help you. maybe it's time to let it go.

I will also endorse this plan B option..Very sound and sensible

i 2nd the motion. and this is my rationale...

a warranty is sold to make jaguar money... not for public good will... jaguar does not offer it from the goodness of its heart, simply to make more revenue!

humbly,

I have owned 3 cars in my life. 1 VW and 2 jags, onallI bought an extended warranty. Throughout the life ofeach car I got WAY more money back than what I payed for the warranty. I am especially particular in maintaining EVERYTHING on my cars, andI get everythingI find broken fixed, because of this the warranty doesnt take advantage of me.

I buy warranty to USE it. I feel if you dont care about small broken things you shouldnt buy a warranty. But if you want all of your cars functions to all work properly I strongly suggest a warranty.
