Torque Converter
I own an '03 X-type with 48,000 miles on it and i recently noticed a very large leak that appeared to be coming from the transmission. I took it to my local Jaguar dealership and they were unable to diagnose it without charging me $1600 to take the transmission out. I did not pay the $1600 because i knew if i did that would just be the beginning. Instead i took it to a shop that deals with European cars and they diagnosed it without taking the trans out. They determined that the bolts have backed out of the torque converter and could have quite possibly rubbed on the engine block enough to crack it. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before? Needless to say my car is a total loss because i can not afford a new transmission much less a new engine. Can anyone suggest anything i can do to resolve this without having to do so? Thanks!

If it was a main shaft seal would they have to drop the engine to determine that?

The trans fluid in the X-type is very obviously red. You would know for sure if it was trans fluid. I would go to different dealer in future because you do not need to take trans out for any diagnosis if you know what you are doing.
As stated above, probably main seal failure. $1000.00 labour for a $20 part is rough, but cheaper than new car, engine or trans.

Now the Jag dealership told me that the trans fluid was actually brown and thats why i was having trouble determining whether it was trans fluid or engine oil. I am only three months out of warranty but under the mileage warranty so i am going to Jaguar with this one because regardless of what the problem is they have definately determined that the torque converter bolts have backed out and thats just something that doesnt just happen on it's own that is a design or production flaw.

can you ask to see the bolts that are backed out? I am amazed. If the bolts from the flex plate to the torque convertor backed out, they would have made a terrible racket at some point. If they can put the car on the lift, and remove the access cover, you could snap a picture and post it here for us to see.
I dont know exactly how much you can see up behind the flex plate, but with a flashlight you should be able to see where the oil is dripping from.

Unless i'm going horribly deaf then i can tell you that it was not making any noise, someone else that drove my car said they felt a slight vibration but i still didn't notice it. Maybe i will ask to see the bolts, if the shop would ever call me back i could tell them. Then again i would have to find a way up there since they don't offer loaners!
