Transfer case leak from the vent-Help
Hello all,
I am having quite a lot of trouble with this issue and there seem to be some very smart people here, please help!
I am a tech at a small independant shop, working on a 03 Jag X-Type,
The problem is a oil leak from the transfer case. Lookslike the passenger side axle seal.
So yeah I replaced the seal, Twice actually. The first time I had the case out of the car while doing and oil pan gasket. the second time was because after putting it together i had a leak, so i put in yet another seal.
Well the car went away for about two weeks and now its back with the same issue.
So I took the case out of the car to get a better look. The leak seems to be coming from the vent that is above the axle seal. I took it out of the case, and it's just a mini PCV.
So, Has anyone seen this vent have a leak issue?
Thanks for your input.
-Ryan

when you took out the tranfer case did you take out the shaft form inside it because inside the case is a seal and if it is broken you need to replace tranfer case or it will burn up inside ,i worked on dis before and it is a sealed unit best get one on ebay or out of breakers yard ,big money new bud

Thanks for your input,
when removing the case the first time i did as jag said, and only pulled the link shaft out about 3 inches,
But with the case on the bench I took the circlip off the link shaft and slid it out, and I can now see the seal in reference. and yup the spring is falling out of the lip, so you guy's nailed it.
The trans fluid was comming into the TC and causing it to be overfilled, then it ran out the vent hole.
I will be putting in a request for a new TC and we'll see what happens.
I am dealing with an aftermarket warranty company, as another has posted about the replacement issue.
i'll post an update in the next day or two. Again, -Thanks

Two possibilities..
1. There is seal leakage from the transmission into the TC and soon the transmission will be low
2. You are over filling the TC..it is only to have 650 mL total in it, otherwise it will come out the vent.

Shupe - that is very impressive, 3 times R&R the TC. From JTIS it seems you had to remove the sub frame and cat convertors each time.
How long does it take (now that the bolts are all free)? I hear a whining noise developing so I may be up for it later this year.

Although JTIS says to remove the subframe you dont need to. There are a couple of really hard to reach bolts, but they are reachable. I did not drop the subframe when i took mine out, I think I could do it in 2 hours if I were to do it again now. Cat cons dont need to come out, but the exhaust after the cats need to come apart back to the flex joint.
Evidence experienced by me so far is that the first thing to go is the rear output pinion bearing, and it can be changed without dropping the TC.
