Just bought a 05 x type with a bad transfer case already removed by the previous owner.. have since bought a replacement and ready to reibstall... QUESTION: on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best I consider myself as having a 2.5 or 3.0 when it comes to mechanical skills.... I am thinking of trying yo put in the transfer case myself... do you think I will be in over my head??
As I mentioned I bought a 05 x ype with the transfer case already taken out... have bought a new used one and ready to attempt to put it back in myself... can someone look at the attached pictures and tell me what parts these are and where they should go... thanks
you need a copy of jtis, the workshop manual shows how to take the transfer box out and has pictures of the main parts. the long shaft goes into the box but should not have been removed, the smaller part goes on the end of the shaft and the drive shaft goes into the big end.

get another transfer box!!
Replacing the seal that only might have been damaged if that shaft was removed with its wire clip in place at the splined end, is a major engineering job requiring the t'box to be stripped and rebuilt. Not one for the faint hearted!!
You should be able to get a partial view of the seals inside the box, looking in the left hand side to see if there's any obvious damage.
The bottom picture is the "roll restrictor". It bolts to the front subframe and to the bracket bolted onto the transmission/transfer case right next to the driveshaft. Without it you will notice it doesn't take much force to rotate the engine and transmission.
Plan to drain and refill transfer case... was told to use Royal Purple but can't find it... can i use any TC oil or does it have to be a specific brand and how much does it take to refill?? Thanks
As for amount, please do a forum search (I even have a couple w/pics) on changing and amounts. It depends on process of removal, how much you remove, how much it holds for full, and excess blowout if over filling.
