Default Uprgrade 17" alloys to 18" alloys

Hi guys, my X Type still has the factory fit 17" Flute alloy wheels. I would like to change them to 18" Jaguar Proteus alloys. Whilst i know this can be done without incident, my questionis this:
My local Jaguar dealer had a set of 8j x 18" proteus alloys for sale at the crazy price of £470 (Apparently their last set that needed to go) However they informed me that they would not fit my X Type as they were for the S type and my alloys need to be max 7.5j x 18".
Ok so i didn't buy them, but having visited some local alloy wheel dealers they all want to sell me 8j x 18" wheels stating that they will fit fine and the 0.5inch extra will not be a problem.
Can anyone advise me on the truth of this matter, Can i infact fit 8J x 18" without incident as i have now found another set at a reasonable price as jaguar have sold theirs.
Hope that's enough info guys,
Thanks Tony

See if the wheel shop will put one on your car to prove to you they fit, for you to feel comfortable buying from them? Its worth a try...

Thanks for taking the time to reply, i did pose that question to a couple of them but they only had the display wheels with no tyres fitted and should i want to by the wheels in question then they would have to order them in, let alone try them (go figure?) so that's why i'm trying to stay with jag wheels. It's proving a real pain as i've seen passing X types running larger rims. Thanks again though, it's appreciated.

Tag, yes, 18x8 wheels can fit on our cars, but you have to be very careful with the offset/backspacing of the wheel. So, the answer is not a simple yes/no answer. If you can find out the offset/backspacing of the rims, we can possibly help you out. Also, you will find that you are going to be limited to 225/40R18 wheels. You can't go any bigger without other modifications (ie, rolling the fenders). So, see what the shops say about that.

18x8 fits without issues. you need a 40mm offset, give or take 5mm. I have 20x9.5 and 20x8.5 with no real issues. I only needed to clearance fenders because I'm so low. just don't go any bigger than 225/40.

Hi TAG,

on ebay at the moment there is a set item number 130433236504 they are currently at £400 for the set, I thought about them, but they have budget tyres (225 40 18 ) on and as I'm intending on changing all 4 I couldn't afford both in one month so i'm going to go for decent tyres on my old sport alloys. but thought i'd mention this as the wheels look in very good condition.

Cheers

David

Sorry I missed the fact they were Proteus alloys. They're in Milton keynes maybe you could go and try them on your car as they are complete, also they are from a X-type not a S-type

Hi Chris, Thanks for the reply, i will try to find out the offset rather than assume that S type 8x18s will fit the X type. Thanks for taking to time to help out.
