That would be the height sensor for your car so it will aim the headlights at the proper height based on how much weight is in your vehicle. When you turn on your headlights, have you noticed how they dip down and then come back up into view. That is the system dropping the headlights, then looking at the sensors to determine where to put the headlight beam.

By the way, there are 3 of them on the car. One on each rear wheel and one up front (forget if it is left or right side).

Do all XType models have those or is that an option?

Robin, if I remember right, it is only applicable to people with HID based headlights. It is a carry over from a European rule that HID headlight systems have to be properly aimed at all times (regardless of weight in the vehicle) to prevent blinding oncoming drivers. To do this, you have to install some automatic headlight leveling system. This is not a concern for halogen based headlights due to their "lower light output".
