Default What aftermarket 2-DIN units are people installing?

Hi there,

I got a 2001 2.5 X-Type a few days ago, and unfortunately it comes with a cassette player (shock, horror, can't even stream from my iPhone ;p). I've had a read around here and a few people have replaced the stereo unit, but i'm wondering, is there a good 2DIN unit out there that looks reasonable in the jag?

I don't want something that sticks out too much though.

Many thanks

With the 2-DIN in-dash some of them sit flush when you put everything back together some of them don't due to our airbox behind the console. My in-dash sits flush but it doesn't sit as flush as the stock radio did. I wouldn't know how to measure each 2-DIN to see if they'll fit stock flush because I don't know measurments to do so.

But I know for a fact because of our airbox behind the radio is a bitch to make it work.

Thanks for that, I'll have a look at your unit (from your sig?) and see what it's like, if you reckon it's not too obtrusive then I may get same one. Which facia surround do you use around the unit?

Thanks

Ah excellent, thanks for that, at least I can actually see how much it sticks out now, doesn't seem too bad tbh, i'll grab the manual for that kenwood, and at least it'll give me some dimensions I know will fit the car.

Thank you

My unit is discontinued, I got it from my brother for $100.

As for the facia surround, I believe there is only one for our cars which is the Metra 99-9500 Dash Kit, http://www.installer.com/item/displa...php?it=99-9500

As for "not too obtrusive" the only down fall of this is that I can't open my ashtray anymore because the entire middle console sticks out past where the stock radio sat in flush. It still sits in flush, just not so deep in like our middle consoles are made to begin with.

Like I said, due to our airbox behind the console, its hard to push it back and get that "stock" flush look again. It doesn't stick out past the edges though, at least mine doesn't. All I had to do was use longer screws on the top part on the hazard strip.

Damn, that's a shame about the ashtray, esp considering the charger for phone, satnav etc all plug into the cigar lighter placed in there.

/me scratches head, and heads off to do some more research

Yup, that's the only downfall... But I don't really plug anything into the cigar lighter... never have.. I use my iPhone for navigation, I also have an iPod cable that comes out from the middle arm rest to plug in my phone for music and charging... and I don't smoke...

But you are right... it's a sacrifice to think about... I don't know if everyone else that put in an in-dash suffers the same losses as my car did, but I'm happy with it.

To each his own right?

Fortunately I don't smoke, but not sure I can live without the charging though. I guess I could just take it to a competent car electrician and have him put in a new cigar lighter hole for my charging needs though.

I'm now thinking I may opt for a single-DIN unit instead, looking around, didn't realise there were so many single-DIN units out there with screens.

You can always do that if you absolutely need it

I'm just letting you know and showing you my head unit experience.. yours may be different and works out for you... Let me know if you want more pics or have any other questions... I'll try to respond to the best of my knowledge.

if you ever have a chance, can you take a better lit picture please?

And did you experience the airbox in the way when installing yours like I explained above?

It looks very nice from what I see now!

And is that the minagallery shift knob?

Yeah I have the same airbox issue, there are only a few units out there that are shallow enough to fit perfectly "flush" in our cars... I was willing to sacrifice the flushness to get the features/brand I wanted.

The shift knob is out of some other Jag, possibly an older XJ. Just temporary until I can find a decently priced Arden to take its place and because the OEM was just awful.

Thank you very much for the pic, does look like a nice setup, do you have the problem with your ashtray not opening with your setup?

Also you mentioned there are some which fit flush, I don't suppose you know which ones do you? Or at least know the dimensions for which I can search to get a unit that will fit flush.

Thanks

My ashtray opens up just fine.

I dont remember them all offhand but www.crutchfield.com can tell you exactly which headunits will fit perfectly in your car.

Default Jvc kw nx7000

As you can see, the JVC unit is far from flush but it is not that noticable on an every day basis. The ashtray opens too.

Might want to check out my install of Pioneer Avic F90BT...ashtray lid opens completely.

There was work involved with this install but well worth it. You will see whats up behind the radio....maybe this will help you in your decision.
