Default What A/C compressor?

Looks like I need a new compressor. Prices run from $160.00 to over $500.00, just for the compressor. I'm looking to get a kit, with the receiver/ dryer, etc.
My question is, are the expensive ones that much better? I would definitely not get a remanufactured one, but are these $250.00 kits on ebay, etc. good enough? I'm taking it to a shop specializing in ac repair, but I want to be ready if they want an arm and a leg for the parts.

Yeah, it was 95 here today! First time ever, I wished I'd taken my truck (which the a/c still works). I gotta get it fixed. I thought about doing it myself. I do most all my work, as no one around here will touch it. If I got a manifold gauge and a vacuum pump, etc., I think I could handle it, but something tells me, a/c work should be left to people who know what they're doing..............

What made you decide on needing the compressor? I have issues so curious why you picked it out of all the different parts/pieces. dryer, clutch, temp sensor, coil etc.. None is cheap and probably not easy either, but I been considering fixing mine. Thanks for any insight you can share.

You might want to stick your face down near the compressor to see if the outer plate is still there.

I have seen the compressor clutch plate 'fall-off' and get lost on the ground somewhere. I even found one wedged in the subframe but the splines were worn so I installed new one.

I keep one in stock for this reason. Just ensure that the little 'shim' is still on the shaft when the new plate is installed. You will need a new nut. Make sure you get the new nut REALLY TIGHT.

Just a thought????

I'm not sure it's the compressor. From what I've read on here, they seem to be a bit trouble prone. I know the clutch is not engaging at all -that could be caused by several things, I know. I hooked up one of those freon cans with the gauge on it. When I pulled and let go of the trigger, the needle on the gauge shot up into the red, which made me immediately think something is causing high pressure -blockage or something. I figured, well it's not going to take freon unless the compressor kicks on, and I better take it to someone who knows more about a/c than me, so I immediately disconnected the can. I was just assuming it would probably be a worst case scenario, as things usually are with me. I'll have to look at that clutch plate thing.

You nee to get an air con specialist with the tools to diagnose the problem. There appears to be too much pressure there.
If the compressor is not kicking in check the relevant fuses and the compressor electrical plug.

The clutch plate is still there. It seems to have a lot of play and spins freely when you turn it by hand. The nut that holds it on seems tight and the switch on top seems secure. I've checked the fuse and the relay. They seems ok. I switched the relay with a different one of same value -no change. After jiggling everything around, I switched on a/c again. Clutch still doesn't move. I'm starting to think clutch has just died.

With the engine off, take a +wire and hit the AC clutch wire with it and see if it clicks on.

I just went ahead and took it in to the shop today, as I know a really good shop in Lexington, Ky., which is almost a 3 hr. drive for me. Turns out I was right -compressor and clutch were both bad, plus a damaged freon line up on the front end that they said looked like it had hit something. This place only uses top quality oe type parts, so with the receiver/ dryer and misc. other stuff, it set me back a little over $1400.00. But I was nice and cold on that drive back home, while the outside temp showed 96. I'm glad I didn't tackle it myself.
