Default x type coolant leak

I have a coolant leak on my x type 51 plate, I have to top up daily and us a expansion tank full in about 10 miles there are no obvious leaks I have checked exp tank, hoses and rad etc and cant find no leaks I have located the water at the near side mudguard, when I lift the plastic there It runs out ? the oil is fine there is no water mixed in so head gasket all ok, when I top up and run car for half hour with cap off I loose no water so its only when under pressure im hoping its just a hairline crack in tank that expands but thought id ask here first as its leaking in strange area any help appreciated. Mark

1966, what you are describing is most likely from 1 of 2 spots. The more likely spot is if you look at the overflow bottle, there is a line that comes in at the back of the tank (near the firewall. Back the hose off a little bit and see if there is a white line in the plastic. If so, you have a hairline crack there and you will most likely require a new coolant bottle.

The second likely spot is if you open the bonnet/hood of your car and look down right behind the radiator, you will see a plastic tee that leads to the thermostat. It is possible that you have a leak at the o-ring joint or possible cracked the plastic there and that is leading to what you are seeing. Now, you mention that you are finding coolant on the near mudguard. Is this a left or right hand drive? This may help narrow down where the likely spot for leakage is occurring.

Chris,

Hayes is in the UK so this will be RHD.

Graham, thanks. You never know these days and how someone from who knows where can be the one you are talking with.

1966, based on the fact that you are getting coolant where you are, I would be looking at the vent line that is coming off of the top of the motor, running back to the firewall and over to the coolant bottle. It is possible that you have a small pin hole leak in that line and it only leaks when the system is under pressure. I had this issue on my car and could only find it when I looked really hard.

tried again last night, took line off that enters back of expansion tank and no sighs of a cracked pipe no furry residude either. this pipe runs inside nearside lh wing (rh drive) and joins at front by radiator. I have searched everything possible and its still baffling me ?

1966, the best advice at this point that I can recommend to you is to get your hands on an inspection mirror (about 2-4 cm in diameter and normally has a telescoping arm) and take the car out for a drive on the motorway. With the car up at temp and hot from say a 20 km drive, pull off and then open up the hood of the car. Pass the inspection mirror near all the hoses. Watch the mirror for signs of fogging. If you see fogging on the mirror, you are really close to where the leak is. The cold glass will condense any leakage really easily. You may need to go for a few trips to inspect everything. But, all should be easy to access.
