X Type engages in reverse and does not move
My 2003 2.5 X-Type seems to engage in reverse, takes up the slack in the joints. However it does not push or move backwards. All forward gears work properly. I drove it 250 mile home when I bought it. I tested the resistance values of the 9 solenoids and they are all within the acceptable range of resistance. I checked the reverse pressure (when in reverse). It fluctuates between 215 and 255 psi, which is normal, although the needle of the gauge fluctuates rapidly, like the speed of buzzing.
The interesting thing is that I can reproduce the same no-movement affect with the foreword gears simply by disconnecting the the main traction-control/ABS plug. It is an easy thing to do because it is one big connector up front on top of the passenger side of the engine. When I do this, it creates the same affect as the reverse problem; joins tighten up, seems to be engaged but does not push/move the vehicle. Therefore, I wonder if my problem of reverse is a function of transmission management/control, not an internal transmission malfunction. What do you think? Cracked piston? This thing has only 50,100 miles on it.

Cgates: Several members describe how their X-Type will not reverse after someone worked on their transmission. To drain the transmission, a bolt / plug has to be removed from the bottom. But by mistake, a nearby bolt is loosened that holds the reverse band in place. By the time the mistake is realized, it's too late. The bolt is re-tightened, but the reverse gear is gone.
Someone here who understands our Jatco transmissions can probably describe how to tell if this is why your X-Type won't reverse.
This post describes how to re-secure the loose reverse band. And page 1 of this thread shows pictures of the correct bolt to drain the transmission fluid - to save people from repeating this mistake: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...e2/#post690700

2003 X-Type reverse problem
Thanks, I think I got the correct plug. I think the band is ok because it takes up the slack in the drive shaves when reverse is selected. And foreward works completely fine, yet does the same as reverse, engages but does not push the car foreword, when the whole ABS system is unplugged at the multipin plug. I am not complaining about forward. That works. I think unplugging ABS in forward demonstrates that there is a control problem. If so, how would you address that?
