X-Type hood
Hi all,
I have an '04 3.0 X-Type in BRG. About a year ago the clear coat on the hood (and only on the hood) began to crack, and then peel. At this point roughly 75% of the hood is missing the clear coat, although the paint underneath is, relatively, undamaged. It's different than any clear coat damage I've ever seen: the cc is literally peeling away in big flakes. The rest of the car is fine, barring some minor scratches and such.
Anyway, what I'm wondering is:
1. Has anyone here seen anything like this before? It's such an odd occurrence I'm curious as to the root cause. The peeling doesn't seem to be related to any particular chipping or road rash, the cc will just split in a small area, then bubble and peel once water gets into it.
2. Does anyone know of a good place to get a replacement hood and/or hood liner? I'm in the greater Pittsburgh, PA area for reference. At this point I really don't feel like putting a ton of money into the car, however I'm really tired of looking at the hood and would rather not pay to have the whole thing refinished.
Thanks!
Justin

Hi Justin,
It is called “delaminating”. GM had this same problem on their cars years ago. The clear coat did not have the proper UV light blocking ability. The clear coat will turn white and flake off, in big sheets some time.
I have the "crows foot" cracking on my hood to deal with. Not as EZ of a problem to fix.
You may want to talk to a body shop to see if they can re-spray a clear on top of your paint. That is what I would try.
You can also keep it waxed up good and it will look much better.
BRG should always look good
I was goingto go to the race but work got in the way. It will be a Jag weekend!

jjbuck2, if you live around Pittsburgh check out the Battaglia auto recycle yard, I saw online they had a few X-Type, call them you might find a hood liner, I just got mine from Harry's U-Pull-It in Allentown paid $2 for it.
Sounds like respray is the fix for clearcoat delamination. As for the liner I think it's false economy to chase a used piece. These liners just fall apart after years of heat exposure and fluid leaks. I recently replaced mine for approx $150.
