Ok everyone....... Kitty 🐱 has a new problem, think I know what it might be but open to other thoughts please.
overheats with no fluid loss,I think it's fan control module.
started the car, turned ac temp all the way down and ac fan all the way up, fans would not turn on,so.......
I hate putting out money 💵 I don't have to do here are my questions......
1- Are there any fuses associated with the fans to check?
2- Can the fans be hardwired like in the old days and just run when the engine is running?

quickest test would be to see if you have 12 volts at fan. if so fan is bad! if not work backwards!

BOwhunter, what year is your car. I can tell you the fuses that are associated with your fans. BUt, odds are, your fan controller finally gave up the ghost.

 

2003 2.5L gas Thermo.

 

Bowhunter:
Remove the plug from the control module.You will need to make two jumper wires with pins on them. Then locate these wires: A Red wire a Brown w/green stripe, a Black wire:A Orange wire w/green stripe:and a Yellow wire w/green stripe on the module.Remove fuse #8 from the
First jump the Black and Yellow and a second from the Brown and Orange, Next verify that fuse #8 is good.Then see if drivers side fan operates, if so the fans are OK, If NOT check for 12 Volts if you have 12 volts the fan is bad.
Second test: Remove fuse #8 and BOTH JUMPERS,Now jump between Black wire and Green wire with one jumper AND second jumper between the Brown w/green and Red wires, Reinstall Fuse #8.. IF the fans DON'Tturn on the fans are toast IF the fans turn ON the controller is toast.
Make sure you get one from a 04 or newer as the 2000 to 03s have component problems that were fixed in 04.
This test ONLY tests the module NOT the ECU circuit or the ECU.

As far as HARD WIRING the fans it would be more work than is worth. You would need a trigger circuit for the control from a source sensing engine temp.but would do nothing for the climate control (air cond). You would need two 12 volt relays(one if you run both fans at once) two heat switches for separate trigger circuits if you ran them separate. I suppose you could us the ECU as a trigger for one but you would get only high speed. but it can be done but I would study a schematic first to see. Just saying.

 

Bowhunter, check fuse F8 in the engine bay fuse box and also fuse F37 in the engine bay fuse box. Either one of these can cause the fans to not work.

If both of the fuses are good (best to be checked with a multimeter to verify good), then odds are you are dealing with a bad fan control module. You can try what Billbjork found from another post that I had made awhile back. But, past experience has shown that the module is what normally fails.

 

Can you please confirm that 2004 and up fan control module connectors have 4 wires coming to it? that is what i have on mine, 1 thick red color that is positive and 1 thick black color that is ground and 2 smaller wires i am assuming they are the signal from ecu.
The reason why i am asking is looking at ebay and amazon for this part, all the pictures( which i know may not be for that exact product) have only 1 smaller pin , not 2

and they are for xtype and some volvos... would that be it ?
