Default 2009 4.2 cooling fan stays on

Is it normal for the Cooling fans to stay on after shutting the vehicle off? Fan stay on for two minutes and then shuts off? It’s a 2009 with a 4.2

Do not rely on the temperature gauge in the instrument cluster to determine coolant temperature as it may not show a difference between 96 C and 128 C. Use a smart phone with the Torque app connected to the vehicle PCM via Bluetooth to the OBD port

When the radiator cooling fans run after the vehicle has been powered down, it's usually an indication of a sticking thermostat. If the vehicle is a normally-aspirated X250, replace the water outlet assembly, which includes the thermostat, each time the coolant is renewed as it can only withstand a finite number of cold to hot to cold cycles before failing. The JLR part number is AJ811793.

I just ordered a elm327 and should be here Saturday. I was curious because I've read elsewhere that the fans staying on was normal for the XF. Is it difficult to change the assembly?

Once the coolant is drained and hoses removed, it's not very difficult. Be patient whilst removing the Torx bolts that secure the water outlet to the heads and top of the block.

It's also a good idea to replace the coolant hoses to the EGR valve as the one that goes under the inlet manifold is prone to failure and can leave you stranded.

Are the coolant hoses I need plastic or rubber? Any part numbers?

The cooling fans have never stayed on in my 2010 XF SC (5.0 V8). Even on 110F days under stop start driving or a quick sprint. So it's certainly not normal and unless it's doing it under extreme temp / driving style then I would definitely investigate as too much heat can be fatal to these engines.

@garysaunders85, the two EGR feed hoses are rubber with JLR part numbers AJ811766 and AJ811761.

I ordered the housing, both hoses and the TB gasket. Is there any other parts I will need? Somebody told me the intake gasket seal?
