I'm considering putting drilled and slotted rotors (and reduced dust brakes) on my 2010 XF Supercharged. I know many of you have done this already and I've read the previous threads. But now you've had them for a while, has anyone found a product they really like and that works well?

I'd like to understand: 1) any issues with noise / squeaks etc. 2) how significant is the impact on braking power; 3) where you bought / what was the price? and 4) which specific products (rotor and pads) fit the 2010 XF supercharged

I bought R1 concepts off ebay for $500 (non S/C, i think S/C are 800 or 900?) This is a full 4 wheel kit with ceramic pads. Unless you do a lot of track racing you won't really notice a performance difference with drilled/slotted or blanks, but they do look much more awesome slotted and drilled. The ceramic pads have almost zero dust which is outstanding, but as with any ceramic pads I've owned, they don't bite as hard and often times need warmed up before they grab much at all. The first few stops after letting the car sit for a weekend will take longer. But the lack of dust is worth it to me.

 

Slotted/drilled rotors have negligible or no impact on stopping distance with street driven cars.

It's 'bling' thing.

 

I just saw an ad for EBC rotors that are coated to eliminate rust. What's interesting is the coating is black! I know they have blanks and slotted but can't remember if they have drilled. You might want to check the EBC website for fitment info. Not sure what they have them for.

 

Thanks everyone. Yes, Mikey, agree that it's for the looks, not to get any braking improvement (and the current brakes are excellent in my view anyway). I'm going for the looks - but at the same time I don't want to severely impair the braking performance either.

Maddshadez - appreciate the guidance. Lots of people seem to use the R1 concepts on our cars. Disappointing to hear that the ceramic pads perform much less strongly - that seems to be a common theme from people. I assume that's the impact of the ceramic pads. Are the brakes noisy?

Kyanite - I'll try the EBC ones - I did see the black ones which of course go shiny on the part of the disc where the pads contact, but black elsewhere.

Anyone else got drilled/slotted on their rides?

 

I had Powerslot slotted rotors on my old STi. They looked cool but they definitely seemed to eat up pads faster than smooth surface rotors. I also seem to remember these types of rotors are more prone to cracking in general.

 

Happy to report they are quiet as a mouse.

 

I've used several drilled/slotted rotors on a few different cars, even inexpensive sets from eBay. Just make sure you don't have drill holes close to the end, stick to professional companies and you probably won't have a problem.

Like you said, you won't notice a difference on the street. You'll actually likely have a negligible decrease in braking performance because you're removing surface area. Modern compound pads don't really suffer from pad float the way they used to, definitely not at public highway speeds (even if you're rather aggressive on the highway.)

Personally I kinda got over the drilled/slotted rotors except on Japanese tuner cars, but as long as you stay with a professional looking company, not someone who's doing it with a drill press in his garage, you're probably going to be okay.

 

If used in UK you should tell your insurer because otherwise they may void your insurance in the event of an accident.

 

I've always ran R1, NEVER any issues and there customer service is great! Kyanite they are local to us too!

 

Funny you say that...I was driving on the 60 two weeks ago and saw one of their trucks. Going to try them on the Infiniti first.

 

Just had them done about a month ago....definitley a difference in braking, as everyone stated already . The wow factor appearance wise is worth it...i think it brings the look to the next level. Hardly wipe my Rims now...was always a PIA.

Not trying to hijack the thread but I had the 370z big brake kit on my G35 with R1 rotors drilled and slotted all around and LOVED IT! Huge difference in sustained long grade or repeated hard braking, such as in coming down Cajon pass from Vegas. Had R1 rotors on my Z28 too. I will be doing them on Higgins when the time comes to replace his rotors.

 

Pretty sure they were the R1's ...had my Performance Mechanic order and install....

did you go through R1 for the caliper paint job? That looks really nice and I was thinking of this for my car and wanted that glossy look.

Also did you get the Pads from R1, or go with EBC reds. I have seen alot of people using the ceramic reds from EBC on the forums having good luck.

Hey Mwaggon...My Performance Shop had them done...he sent them out her on LI...There ceramics are Power Stop...I like them, no brake dust...just have to press harder on the brake pedal.

 

Any issues with the brake pad wear sensor on the car when going with these pads and rotors?

In the market for brakes and want to make sure before I pull the trigger.

I won't say the drilled is noisy but unless you have run a pair they do have a different sound.

@psinsyd, There shouldn't be any issues with the sensor, however I just went ahead and removed mine, they were in rough shape anyways and I don't see them worth the cost of replacement, I do a brake check every few months anyways.
