Default Escort Radar 9500ci install

Thinking about getting this installed on my 2011 XF base model. Am I going to run into any issues with the front laser shifter? Or the rear over the back license plate? I guess the parking sensors supposidly activate the laser detector? Any suggestions would be helpful. I plan on having this done at Best Buy's Geek Squad.

I have this on my car. It was installed by a custom stereo place. Not sure I'd trust Best Buy with my Jag, but that's up to you. I had my installer put the control unit and display in the small cubby just forward of the cupholders, by fabricating a custom panel.

The front laser units are behind the grill, and the rear one is mounted just below the bottom edge of the rear bumper. I have some pics of the cubby and the front shifter, but not of the rear unit at the bottom edge of the bumper.

Both locations decrease the range, as they are fairly low in the car, but I seem to pick up signals from plenty far enough away. The front shifters are at about the same level as the front license plate, so that's fine. The rear one is low, being at the lower edge of the bumper but to me it's worth the aesthetics. Mounting that thing to the license plate frame to me looks a bit odd. The "passenger eject" button is simply a graphic glued to a lighter plug blank.

You have been very helpful. Do you mind uploading a pic of the back bumper? Thanks again.

Here is one taken with my cell phone. The rear unit is that thin rectangular thing near the lower right.

I was wondering how to go about this myself. Thanks very much for sharing, N4S. BTW, are you sure you want your console in plain sight? I believe that you can get either an infraction or misdemeanor in California if a cop notices you with a lidar jammer. Or is yours just a detector?

The bin has a closable lid, though of course I would not do anything illegal. Btw, you cannot use a detector in Virginia or the District of Columbia (or Canada), and if you do with a built-in model, they can impound the car. So don't install this unit if you drive to those places or if you do, make sure it's disabled and kept out of sight (they have devices that can detect detectors so hiding them isn't enough; you have to be sure it's completely off).

Need4Spd,

Where would I be able to find that fabric? JoAnn Fabrics? Is it just made out of leather?

If you're referring to the covering fabric for the control panel board, I think it may be textured vinyl. The installation shop sourced it so I don't really know for sure. Looks to me to be pretty heavy duty, like something you'd use for seat covers or custom stereo enclosures.

Good looking install but I was wondering about the placement of your heads behind the grille. I realize you're doing this for aesthetics but does the reduction in performance from being behind the grill and the angle of the rear head even work for its laser purpose... or is it the receiver for radar you're showing up front? Not trying to be critical because it's a real good looking install and I've just became "addicted" to the countermeasures world... PM me when you get the chance...

Yes, very nice, too. It's nice to be able to hide the control unit and display when you want to, though.

I'm going to look around at other car install places. After watching several videos on youtube, this is an extensive install and I want a professional installer to do it. The rear laser interceptor has to be drilled directly above the back license plate. Running the wires to the the control interface is going to take patience and crafstmanship. I went on Escort's webpage and found an installer that is recommeded by them.

I have a K40 front radar detector plus front laser jammer on my car. The control for the K40 is via a small key fob-sized remote, so nothing is visible. There are two small blue LEDs inside the instrument panel that light up when radar or laser is detected. I've had it for two years now and I'm quite happy with it. The only issue I had was that I initially had rear radar detection as well, and the blind spot warning system kept setting it off so I had that removed. I asked K40 about rear laser detection, but they suggested I skip that as laser is not intended to be used from behind.

Update- Dropped my XF off for the install today at a reputable auto shop. Will cost me $575 to have the install with the control module placed above the cup holder identical to Need4Spd's, getting the car back tomorrow.

Mr. Spd, who did the install for you? I'm in the Peninsula, too, and am looking at getting a customer installed radar/lidar defense system as well. Can you refer me to the shop who did your install? Would you recommend them (I assume so, since you seem happy with it)?

Hey Need4SPD,
Its been a while, How are you making out with down loading your updates from Escort? They send so many at times seems like I have to down load new up dates every other week. Also, I though that this detector (9500ci) is suppost to beat the detectors, detector, beacuse it doesn't put out the same waves as a standard detector. Atleast that what was stated in the escort forum.

I don't bother with uploading the updates to the unit, as I guess I don't see the advantages of doing that. Doesn't it just update the locations of traffic cameras? I don't think the updates improve the performance of the detection.

As for being undetectable to detectors, I don't know. I think it's supposed to be invisible to such things but I have no way of knowing. I suspect that's only useful in places where detectors are illegal, but if I lived in one of those places, I'd probably not get a built-in detector so as not to risk having the car confiscated.
