Default metal bar that goes across the trunk under mat in xfr

what is this and what does it do? trying to put in a speaker box and that couple inches prevents it from sliding all the way to the seat back

Don't remove it, it stabilises the rear suspension, it's not just the xfr that has it fitted!

Yep, it's a rear strut brace.
Each end is bolted to the top of the strut tower via the existing bolts (four each side IIRC).
It's not REALLY essential, it just improves the handling of the rear end near the limit, more in keeping with the "sporting" nature of the XFR and other higher spec XFs.
If you never drive in this way and handling is a lesser priority to you than tunes than by all means go ahead and remove it, just some trim panels to unclip and move out of the way to access the mounting nuts then (IIRC) a 14 mm socket to undo the nuts.

Most of the fires are out, we have had lots of rain recently where the worst fires were.
Still lots of cleaning up and recovery to go.
