Which oil to use
I wrote Castrol the following email:
I have a 2011 Jaguar XF, with a 5.0 non supercharged engine. The oil spec in the owners manual calls for a Ford specification that is not lisgted on any Edge bottle. Which oil should I use,and is it available anywhere except the dealer?
I got this reply:
Thank you for contacting Castrol.
Castrol always recommends following the guidelines of the original engine manufacturer for the recommended grade and API specific to your application. This information can be found in the vehicles owner’s manual or by contacting the manufacturer directly.
For a 2011 Jaguar XF 5.0L 8-cyl, as per Castrol’s lubrication guide, only special engine oil that can be obtained from your local Jaguar or Land Rover dealer is recommended for use.
Castrol does not have a 5W-20 motor oil in the North American retail market meeting Ford WSS-M2C925-A
Only Jaguar is able to identify the equivalent performance aspect and/or make a recommendation for an appropriate alternate product if available.
Please contact Jaguar for further assistance and to ensure that you service your vehicle with the correct oil.
So what are you guys using? I do go to the dealer for my oil changes, but I have had to top off the oil and am thinking of doing my own changes.

This question has been asked and debated to death on this forum, but the simple answer is that Ford WSS M2C925-A was superseded by Ford WSS M2C945-A a few years ago, and any fully synthetic 5W-20 oil which meets either or both of these specs will be perfectly OK, you don't have to use the specified Castrol brew. Millers, Motul, Motorcraft, Mobil 1 and others make an oil which meets the specs, for example see this page: WSS-M2C945-A spec replace the WSS-M2C925-A for motor oil 5w/20
I use a Penrite oil here in Oz for much the same reasons you are asking about this - the specified Castrol brew is simply unavailable other than at a Jaguar dealer, the Jaguar dealers charge a fortune for it and won't sell it unless they perform the oil change themselves, for which they charge another fortune, and I prefer to do my own oil changes. This is the one I use: ENVIRO+ 5W-20 (Full Synthetic)
As you can see it meets both of the specs mentioned above, and as an added bonus for me it is made by an Australian company. It is also readily available and reasonably cheap.

So they can and do charge like a wounded bull.
I'm coming up to three years of XF ownership now and I have never taken either XF to the dealer for any work, I've either done it myself or taken the car to an independent mechanic.
Someone asked about getting the Special Castrol for top offs..I've been fortunate to have a great Dealership and got to know all the techs there and I have the 4 year free oil change deal.. I think it takes 7.6 qts per change and so after each oil change (once a year) the techs give me the half quart or so of the oil they didn't put in ..never used any as my car didn't use any oil between oil changes..So now I have a couple qts saved up for when I start doing my own oil changes..
Oz man, glad you found a perfect substitute for the Jag spec'd Castrol liquid gold.

Here is my response from Jaguar US:

We appreciate your inquiry. Jaguar does not recommend a brand of oil for this vehicle, but rather, the specifications of: SAE 5W-20 meeting Jaguar

Been inside a few engines, and I will never be a fan of the extended oil drain interval. That said, the most important aspect of what oil you use is always the weight and that it's what the manufacturer recommends. Lots of extended drain specs out there that just equate to anti thickening agents is my guess, the best thing you can do is maintain your as prescribed by the severe service schedule.
I use Wal-Mart supertech 5w-20 full synthetic which is made by Shell for Wal-Mart and meets GM's Dexo's world extended drain standards and retails for $17 for 5qts.
I change the oil every 3kmi, I change the filter every 6kmi.

It looks like they changed oil specs between 2013 and 2014.
My owner's manual says 5W 30 spec WSSM2C913-C motor oil should be used.
The oil filler cap on the motor says 5W 20, not 5W 30
The dealer used 5W 20
The oil manufactures say use 5W 30 spec WSS M2C913-C for a 2013 and for a 2014 use 5W 20 WSS M2C925- A only (superseded by WSSM@C 945-A)
Since my car was made towards the end of the 2013 model year I am unsure which oil to use.
Do I use the 5W 20 as on the cap and which the dealer used or the different spec 5W 30?
Thanks
Eric
