Default JTB00132 - Air Compressor Removal

Anybody got a copy of the TSB JTB00132 which outlines the new procedure for remove/replace the air compressor.

Some new method where you don't have to remove the bumper?

Thanks!

Basically, you have to take off the black-coloured wheel arch liner, or at least release the front of it so you can peel it back to allow access. Only thing is you can be working blind on some of the bolts, so its not quite as straightforward as having it all in front of you when the bumper is off.

Jaguar time is 30 minutes via the wheelarch route, so obviously a money saver for owners when UK labour charges are £100 an hour !!

Thanks Fraser.

Do you need to take the wheel off? Do you need to jack the front of the car up or work on a hoist?

A copy of that TSB I have says to follow the instructions in section 204-05 of the workshop manual. That tells you to just remove the radiator splash shield so I don't know if that would be any easier than the wheel arch method.

I think i'll be taking the bumper off then....

The car is pretty low and there's not much room to move in my garage.

Only problem is that the plastic undertrays are all held together with cable ties, so they'll all have to be re-done...

Thanks anyway gents!

Well what a £&€!ing job that was.

Unless you have a hoist, then the bumper really must come off. With a hoist you can get in from underneath, but that still means removing the plastic undertrays...

It's not that time consuming TBH, i've got a little practise now and it only takes me 5mins to get the bumper off, leaving the plastic undertrays together, just separating from the bumper.

One problem is that the horns are exactly in your way...

So you need to dismount the horns, and it's impossible to do so without removing the bumper.

And here is the compressor itself;

From the state of it, it appears to be original. 150'000kms on the original compressor, not bad!

Now here is where the aggrivation comes in;

As you can see, the new compressor doesn't have the filter/dryer assembly on it.
So you have to remove it from the old compressor???

The plastic fittings were jammed solid. I could get one out (it's a typical pneumatic push-fit connector) but the other was jammed solid, I broke it while trying to loosen it a little...

So now, one of my dodgiest repairs ever, with a hot glue gun, no pictures its too embarrasing...

But here is the new compressor in place;

I didn't put the rusted bracket back in place...I just couldn't....

Well there are no more AIR SUSPENSION ERROR messages and everything is running fine, it all appears to be working, so I hope that's it for another 150'000kms...

Removed mine from the wheel on jackstands, after converting the suspension. Btw, that dryer/filter is sometimes integrated inside the compressor, depending on who you bought it from. Arnott's compressor is integrated.

yes I just always removed the driver side wheel liner and tire and replace them, and also the fuel filter while I have the liner removed.

This is superb, managed to get my hands on a new compressor, thanks for this.

Did you manage to get your hands on the TSB JTB00132 manual?

I think thats the last time I'll go to an official Jag garage unless I'm under warranty with a new Jag (and considering the new models I don't think that'll be the case).

I was told I needed a new compressor, managed to buy a new Wabco one from Holland.

Anyway took it to a very good local garage in Rochdale instead, we replaced the compressor but the problem was still occuring. Also the LH side head light was flickering. Opened up to get at the Headlight, turned out that a bolt had detached and two earth cables had come loose. Once these were properly earthed again everything including the air suspension was working fine.

It is likely there was nothing wrong with the old compressor it just lacked an earth, so so much for official dealer diagnostics. Anyway at least I have a new compressor and a spare old one.

A gentleman in Glasgow had this very problem on this forum but I cannot find the thread. So it may be of note to people having air compressor problems to check the earthing cables on the LH side behind the headlight before going further.

Is anyone able to confirm the relay for the compressor is R4 in the relay/fuse box? The garage seemed to think it was R1 others say it is the brown one but that is R3?

I have read this on here now a few times, happend to someone very recently, so any strange suspension compressor issues along with other weird electrical behaviour, As acebars says definetely check those earth connections behind the headlights!!
