Anyone know how easy the above job is?

And if you remove the plinth, how many holes are left in the bumper and are they right at the edges?

Thinking of getting a shorter numberplate but want to remove the plinth then of course! And no point doing it if there are going to be holes left that the short plate won't hide.

Anyone got pics of it removed?

Depends on how it was mounted - some plinths come with screws, some come with rivets. Either way there will be holes once removed, usually its only 3 holes, 2 being in upper corners, and 1 in the center.


They are usually inset from the outer edge, depending on size of the plate, not sure. I'd say about 10-15 mm at least from edge.

Way back when I picked up my 2013 CPO XJ, I was astounded to realize that the front plate bracket was attached to the front bumper by a couple of sheet metal screws. When the car was new, the dealer must have had the car-wash kid attach the bracket because one screw was up high and the other much lower. I guess anyplace he felt like driving them into the bumper. Why not! It was "just" an $80,000 vehicle. Who cares? I was able to find some paint matching epoxy and filled the holes. Being low down on the vehicle, the patch is barely discernable.


Compare this to a similar experience when purchasing my wife's Lincoln. It came with paint matching pop-in plugs. not the best, but a bit more elegant.

I hate front numberplates!! Shame we need them in the UK

 

My car came without one so had to add the bracket. It is not hard and if done correctly it takes 4 rivets. See below for the album with pics.
