Default jerky acceleration from stop

Anyone having issues with the smoothness of their acceleration from a standstill? When I leave a red-light around town at normal speed in my 2011 XJ SC, I have trouble getting smooth acceleration. The shifts are jerky. And, even when not shifting, the acceleration surges and is not smooth. When I have the knob set on S, none of these problems occur ad the car drives like a dream.

My previous car had a CVT so I was concerned the problem was with me being used to a different kind of transmission. But, I drove an XF loaner that shifted very nicely, so I think the problem lies with my XJ.

My dealer says the transmission goes through a learning period and may need a couple of thousand miles to adjust to my driving style.

Any thoughts?

No problems with mine from mile 0 to current 15,000--always smooth. That "learning period" thing sounds like bull--you have a problem and they need to fix it.

I agree with houtexjag, that sounds like BS. They need to just fixit - I'm 17k miles in and no such issues

The technology in these transmissions are widely used in the auto industry, and while the learning feature exists and its valid, it has nothing to do with what you described. What they need to do is connect their transmission programming tool in your car and download the software again, maybe an updated version, and that will cause a 'reset' in the transmission 'learning' memory bank. After that the car will indeed learn how you drive, and will put the shifting points within a pre-defined range based on your driving habits. This will take no longer than 2 tanks of gas. So tell your dealer to stop being a lazy *** and get to work to make you happy.

I have noticed somewhat jerky acceleration when the car is in sport mode in dynamic mode, but that's to be expected because it's revving so much higher for each gear. It really becomes a beast in that combination! Are you having this jerky acceleration when you are in normal mode, and the gear selector in D?

First, thanks to everyone for their very helpful input.

I only notice the problem in normal mode and gear selector in D.

No way?! That's been a common problem for my BMW 750. That is one of the main reasons I'm looking to switch to an XJ. I hope this is not a common problem.

This is not a common problem. You need to have the car checked.

Problem solved! JTB00244NAS1 "Off Throttle Engine Idle Fuel Cut in Timing" from 24 February 2012 was the fix. The difference in the car is subtle yet completely transformational.

What exactly is involved in this process for JTB00244NAS1?

I believe just a software update.
