Key Fob
My 2011 XJL key fob is not recognized when I try to start my car…. I place it by the light switch and it tries to revive up. I changed the key fob battery. Any suggestions?

I believe your new coin battery failed, go put another one in. When I do replaced mine I always buy the ones that are made in USA, Japan or Switzerland. I simply don't trust the ones that are made in China no matter what brand it is. But hey, it is just me.

A few tips I've posted previously:
1. Don't buy cheap CR2032 batteries on Amazon, Ebay, etc. as you don't know how old they are or if they're genuine. Buy them locally from your big box home improvement store or chain pharmacy, where you can check the expiration date and be sure they're not knock-offs.
2. Keep a spare CR2032 fob battery in your glove box so you can replace it as soon as it dies.
3. You should have 2 Smartkey fobs. If one works and the other doesn't, swap the batteries. That will tell you if the battery is dead, or if it's the fob.
4. The prongs that secure the battery inside the fob often stretch with age and repeated battery replacement. If that happens to your fob, don't try bending the prongs because if they snap off your fob is toast and you'll have to replace it - $$$$! To maintain a good connection, make a small shim from aluminum foil and place it under the CR2032 battery to make better contact with the stretched prongs.
Note that this problem used to be solved by using a CR2035 battery because it's a wee bit thicker than the CR2032. They're both 3V and 20mm in diameter, while the CR2032 is 3.2mm thick and the CR2035 is 3.5mm thick. Unfortunately, it appears that the CR2035 is no longer available.

Also with age you eventually will need to replace the FOB. I have went thru all the repair details like replacing the membrane switches and all that. It's just cheaper and easier to get a complete new one from china.

I have a (new to me) 2012 XJ with only one fob. I see replacements for $25 on eBay. Will a dealer entertain programming a non OEM fob? If not, can locksmiths do them? I thought I read you need SDD to do it.
For under $25, I'd buy the Ebay Smartkey fob. This one is from a US seller and has a 30-day refund. It's cheap and what do you have to lose?

Be sure to read my Post #10 in this 2015 thread. If you buy it and have it programmed and it works to remotely lock and unlock the doors, open the trunk and start the car, remove the battery and see if it will function to start the car when you get the Smart Key Not Found message.

Good luck!

Here is my post on the F-Type forum. Take note, there are other members on that Forum who took the eBay route that were successful. Well I think for me, time was not on my side. It could be the eBay FOB was good but had a bad programming.

Just a note as this is confusing to me also?
The FOB is what opens the doors and trunk. The transponder is what starts the car. However they are combined in the Jaguar Smart key. You can easily add a fob on your own. The transponder is the hard part as there is a lot of stuff to prevent car theft so it's not real easy or straight forward. This is also the reason most dealers won't help out. I had to bring proof of ownership of the car to the Jaguar parts department before they would cut the Tibbe key.
I have used the cheap chinese keys and FOBs without any problems. I did have to use the dealer on an earlier Jaguar as it had a Tibbe key and it's not a real common type of key. Which is a bit odd as several common Fords also used Tibbe keys in the past. With this correctly cut key I could unlock the door with the key, it would fit the ignition and turn in the ignition. But it would not start the car until I programmed the transponder portion using SDD.

When I bought my 2012, it only came with one fob. I bought two more off of Ebay. My dealer programmed them. I was told that I would need to replace the KVM module though. They said there was a slight chance to reprogram the keys without replacing it, but it wasn't likely. I didn't feel like wasting time, so I just had the KVM replaced.

When I replaced the battery in my 2020-XK-Convet Key Fob, I broke the tiny Positive Battery Post off. Anyone know where I might send my Key Fob to have it Re-Soldered. It is very small and will undoubtedly need a specialist. It's a new Fob and I'd rather have it repaired than go through the process of purchasing and programming another. Thanks.

2018XF25T sorry to hear you had to pay so much. I just noticed your in the Houston area? Too bad I did not see this earlier as I am about 50 miles outside of Houston and probably could have programmed everything you needed with my SDD setup for free.
I do see you have a 2018 in your signature and maybe SDD won't work on that year as they were moving to Pathfinder about that time too?

When I bought my XF from Vroom it only came with 1 key fob and I wanted one spare programmed the soonest. Yes, time wasn't on my side, but anyway like a lot of people here in the USA, I received a stimulus check from the Feds & that even out the purchased of my Key Fob. The check sure came at the right time,
I am new to this forum (less than a year), started out right after I purchased my Jag, but before that I was just a lurker gathering information about the Jag I want to purchase. I've read some of your postings and I do learn a lot from you & to other members as well. Thanks
Here's a picture of my XF with a Euro plate.
