Looking to Trade In 2011 XF for XJ or XJ L
Hello everyone,
Please help, opinions would be great...
Jag is currently offering some sweet deals on 2013 XJ's. Here is my dilema:
My 2011 XF has the V8, which I love, and the 2013 XJ's with short wheel base only have the V6. I cannot see spending all the dough on a long wheel base XJ to get the V8. I have test driven a 2011 XJ L and a 2013 XJ. I did like ride of 2013 vs. 2011 XJ L. I am afraid to buy V6 car, though in test drive it felt pretty good, turning off the stupid eco switch.
My two questions for the group:
1. What would you buy, the 2013 XJ, or a used XJ L?
2. What would pay?
Thanks,
Gregg Smith

The V6 feels really good in the new cars. Not much difference noticeable between the power, throttle responsiveness or smoothness of the V8 and the V6. However, the reason why I would be tempted to go with the 2013 V6 is that it also has a supreme 8sp transmission that is ultra smooth and responsive. Not to be ignored that I ran 4 back to back MPG tests using my V8 XF, vs. V6XF and my V8 XJL vs. V6 XJ. In all "Freeway only" tests the V6/8sp combination offered superior fuel economy to the tune of 32.7 MPG vs. aboout 26.5 for the V8/6sp. I feel that both the V6 and the 8sp are responsible half and half.
On the other end of the spectrum, the XJL looks more elegant with its length but, the XJ is noticeably more agile. Both handles well but, the SWB XJ wins.
Also, supposedly the ride of the 2013 were improved, although I could not make that improvement out during my long (100 miles) drives of a loaner XJ.
Good luck to you, what ever decision you make,
Albert
I just went through this and opted for the 2011 XJL SC. I chose the 2011 as I appreciated someone else taking the substantial depreciation hit. However, the 8sp would be a huge improvement for the large V8.

My wife and I test drove the 2014 Range Rover Sport yesterday courtesy of my Jag/Land Rover dealership where I purchased my 2011 XJL, and I must say that she and I both hated the ECO engine shutting off thing. If they offered the ability to permanently disable the ECO switch via the dealer, then I would go in for the 2013. Like Albert said, I have heard even from the Jag salespeople that you can't notice that much of a difference between the V6 SC and the NA V8. However, that being said, I absolutely do love the V8 in my car...you just can't go wrong with it or of course, the V8 SC.
Best of luck...let us know what you decide. Cheers!

I drove the V6 SC in the XJ and the NA engine is superior in terms of performance.
It's got extra 40hp and 48 lb-ft torque. That's significant amount of extra hp/torque.
I believe car and driver tested NA XF 0-60 in 5.1 seconds. The lighter XJ V6SC is closer to 5.5.
I am still sticking to my guns and saying go for 2012 SC V8

I drove a 2013 v6 XJ loaner for a few days recently while my 2011 XJSC was in for service. I had a good opportunity to drive it over the same roads as my daily commute. I tried to have an open mind as I was happy to have an XJ loaner and was anxious to see how the ride felt compared to the 11. My experience was that the ride felt a little too soft. The engine provides adequate power for most driving but the auto shutoff seemed to be a constant annoyance to me. It shudders when the car restarts and just seems out of place in a car like this. Granted, you can turn it off every time you start. Bottom line, I was relieved to get mine back. There is no comparison between the performance of the scV8 and the new V6. Yes, the 8 speed is slick and the mileage is improved, but I'd still take the used V8 over the V6. Hope this helps.
I have a 13 SC and would answer based on what most of your driving is. A V6 in the city and traffic is usually more than fine. I usually drive in the city and end up feathering the throttle most of the time. However, I had a recent opportunity to put about 1200 miles on a trip with mostly highway. The SC was great enjoyment and passed with ease. Cruising at 90 felt like going 60 and 70-90 passing was a breeze. That said, as Albert noted, gas mileage is so, so, especially for the SC V8. I got about 25 mpg.
The 8 speed tranny is smooth. The eco start stop is annoying, but can be turned off or I now know how to not have it engage. If you don't press down hard on the brakes after stopping, it doesn't engage. However in city driving, it does save fuel. The new XFs and Land Rovers have the feature as well.

Everyone:
It took awhile, but I bought a 2012 SWB yesterday, 51k, 16k miles... Awesome car, got a bit of a creak in sunroof and needs touchscreen upgrade...
Will be taking to dealer, do you think I will have any issues getting touchscreen upgraded?
