Default XJL Reliability

Hello everyone. I know you probably get post like this all the time from new members, already looked at some of them, but thought I'd make my own to see if I could get some more specific feedback. I am getting ready to pick up a new car, right now I have a 2010 Mustang GT vert but I need something a little more... classy. I would really like to get an XJ but have reliability concerns. My budget is 50k and I have found an XJL with a little under 30k miles on it. I would have the car about 3 years and would put about 30k miles on it each year. I take several LONG drives to my condo in the NE. This trip puts about 3k miles on the vehicle each time and I make it about 5 times a year. I understand that putting this many miles on a car will cause some problems but do you think I can trust the XJ enough to not break down on me in the middle of Virginia even though I will probably sell it with 120k+? And if not, do you think a XF could last up to about 100k miles without to many issues? I have found a 2014 MB E350 Coupe with a lifetime unlimited mileage warranty but I'd prefer the Jag if I think I can trust it enough. Thanks in advanced!

Reliability is not a problem with these cars, and my local independent says they are very good. The only problem that caused an upset was the roof popping noises on early cars. This didn't affect the driveability of the car, it was just a real nuisance ! These should all have been fixed by now, but check this one out.

The previous model, (like mine) can run the marathon, with many people reporting over 150k miles and quite a few over 200k. This model only dates to 2010 in the US, so very high mileages have yet to be reported. The basic car is the same as the previous model, albeit the body is an "avant garde" shape, unlike mine with its traditional Jaguar style. One advantage is the air suspension is now only on the rear, so less to maintain and go wrong.

This is my 3rd Jaguar XJ. I have almost 30k on it now and none have ever left me on the side of the road. I will say that this current car has had only 2 issues. First was when I got the car there was one bad pixel in the instrument cluster and two, an exhaust cam timing adjuster failed resulting in a slightly rougher idle and a little less performance, but just got an error light and the dealer replaced it quickly. But these Jags are much more reliable than a Mercedes.

There was a design flaw in the water pump when the 5.0L engine first came out that wasn't corrected until 2012 that caused minor leakage from the pump. The pump was redesigned (several times) and all current models now use an updated design. If you buy a used 2011/2012, make sure to check the pump.

I've owned an XJ and XKR and now a Ftype R over the last number of years and they have been overall, more reliable than any other cars I've owned. Note that JD Power places Jaguar at number 2 out of all cars in reliability, but I guess thats more recent.

Just to add something... I was told by a dealer here in Canada, that if the car was still on original warranty, so lets say a 2010 that was near the end of its 4 year warranty, they could extend it for a new buyer. The reason they told me was they wanted my 2010 XKR before this date came up and would pay a premium for it as it made it more attractive to the next purchaser.
Not sure if this could apply to you or not.
Lawrence.

Just a slight correction - in the latest JD Power survey, Jaguar placed 2nd on Initial Quality, not overall reliability. For overall reliability, Jaguar was middle of the pack.

Actually, I partially retract my previous statement. Here is the 2013 vehicle dependability report (I don't have access to the 2014 report). Jaguar unfortunately is near the bottom.

Difference is Initial Quality only captures problems within the first 90 days of ownership. Vehicle dependability captures problems after 3 years of ownership.

The 2014 report ranks Jaguar second after Porche.

Do you have a link you can share? I've only seen the IQ survey results posted here, not the VDS

This is the closest I can find for the 2014 JD Power VDS

2014 Vehicle Dependability Study Press Release | J.D. Power

It lists the top 5 as

1. Lexus
2. Mercedes
3. Cadillac
4. Acura
5. Buick

I think you are confusing the Initial Quality survey results with the Vehicle Dependibility Survey results

Nice, Jaguar had a nice jump up. Impressive that Lexus got even better from last year's number.
