Configurators on multiple sites are telling me a different battery size is in order for an "04 VDP" as opposed to XJ8 or XJR. I thought they were mechanically identical?
Autozone says T8 rather than the H8 listed for the XJ8 and XJR, and Exide says 93 rather than the L5/49/H8 listed for the XJ8 and XJR. They also seem to suggest lower-end batteries.
The formatting got muddled when you copied that over, and sorry it's too technical for me anyway.
Can someone confirm in non-gearhead language that the H8/L5 sized batteries I see recommended here in the forum for the 4.2L 04 X350 XJ8, particularly the Exide L5/49X, is the same one that should be used in the 4.2L 04 X350 VDP version? I thought they were the same vehicle with different interiors, but Autozone, Exide, and now Sears seem to think otherwise.
In his search for a suitable U.S. replacement for the original Varta silver calcium batteries, our member Box learned that the charging voltages in the X350/X358 are higher than in most cars, and higher than many conventional lead acid or AGM batteries are comfortable with. He identified the Exide Global Extreme battery as a good candidate and confirmed with Exide that it is suitable for our higher charging voltages (the same batteries are also branded Exide NASCAR Extreme).
I've put these in a few X350s, an XJ40 and a Mini Cooper and so far they are working really well, starting these cars better than ever. And the great news is that they are available at low prices from Home Depot!
To allay any fears you have about buying the wrong physical size, you can easily measure the height, length and width of the battery currently installed in your car and compare those dimensions to the specs of the batteries you are considering.
Don, is that an actual picture of the battery on Home Depots site? Looks pretty small. I thought our X350s took the big batteries that look like diesel cars take. Like the one pictured (for size, I mean, not specs)

Photos on Home Depots website are generic and you do not want to buy that Duracell battery.

Hi Blairware,
As abonano has already replied, the HD photo is just a generic catalog shot. The actual L5/49/H8 Exide Global Extreme battery is a perfect fit for an X350. I've put them in several X350s and other Jags with great results. Thanks again to Box for the research to confirm these batteries are suitable for the higher charging voltages in the X350.
I can vouch for abonano and Don B. Just last week I put a new L5/49/H8 Exide Global Extreme battery in my 2008 XJL base model and the car cranks faster, idles smoother, accelerates smoother, and haven't had any thrown any weird codes like I was before. I got it from Home Depot in stock for $119. It was the cheapest part I've ever bought for my Jag

Ditto here, put Exide L5/49/H8 in my XJ8L and couldn't be happier.
Plus it can be trickle-charged all day long without damage or worry.
