04 xj8 won't start
Jacked car up on stands changed water pump, thermostat. Drive belt. Put all back together won't start. Cranks won't even kick. Does it matter if still up on stands. Didnt put covers back on under car yet. Help
I had this problem once and it started next day, so leave it for a while and try again.
Do you have a Mongoose? I had a DTC related to a fuel pump moitoring circuit.

milhunkcj,
Just some random thoughts:
Is it possible the electrical connector for the crankshaft position sensor was disconnected or disturbed while you were performing your service and was not fully reconnected?
Is it possible the inertia switch (left hand A pillar) might have been tripped when you were raising the car?
Is it possible the security system has disabled the car due to the inclination sensor (in the trunk) sensing that the front end has been raised?
Is it possible that you might have left a door open or some electrical component on that could have depleted the battery while you were performing the service? If so, it might be worth checking the battery voltage while cranking - if it drops much below 11V under load the ECM may not trigger the ignition to fire.
Sorry if these are all snipe hunts, just trying to help you cover all the possibilities.
Cheers,
Don

Hi milhunkcj,
The crankshaft position sensor (CKPS) is mounted on the timing cover on the front of the engine, down near the crankshaft pulley. I don't have a photo but here's the illustration from the Workshop Manual:

Hi Don thanks for the information.the connector is just laying there. I didn't take it off must of knocked it off while taking off fan & shoud or drive belt.I thought it was for headlight washer option that I don't have. Couldn't this being off make it crank slow like out of time or something like that. Thanks for all ur help. Cheers ( see ya) chris

Hi Chris,
I doubt the CKPS being disconnected was the cause of your slow cranking - that was probably due to your battery voltage declining from trying the start the car. But if the CKPS is disconnect the car will not start because the ECM cannot determine the engine speed or ignition timing without it.
So now that you've reconnected it, does the engine start?

Seen wire laying there but had to come to work for 12 hrs. Won't get a chance to put back on till tomorrow. Can it be put on from under the car. Still have covers off. Thanks will let u know. Have a good day. Chris
Reconnected ckps still won't start. Cranking slow. Even after I charge the battery. Checked starter connection only 8 v. Over 12v at battery. Below 11v when cranking? What do u think .thanks for all ur help. Have a good one. Chris Giles
