You should be able to open the boot/trunk using the key if the button on it does not release it. The key hole is just under the lid of the boot/trunk. This problem is quite common and some have found that they have to pull up on the boot/trunk while they use the key to release it.

The problem is often caused by the gas struts not putting enough pressure to raise the boot when the lock is disengaged. The latch releases but the boot does not raise quickly enough and the latch then relocks.

Thanks,

chris

Great news. Glad to help.

Now that you have the boot open I would suggest that you somehow test the latch mechanism to ensure it's working from the button and the release in the cabin. If that all appears to be functioning correctly then its most likely to be the struts at fault.

The struts are relatively straightforward to replace I believe. They are just attached to the rear of the boot lid and body. I'll see if I can find a part number for them for you.

Thanks,

Chris

Looks like the strut is the following part number C2C38869 (superseded part numbers C2C2896 C2C23970 C2C26937):
Trunk / Boot Strut - British Car Parts

You'll should replace both.

Thanks,

Chris

The struts just unclip at each end and you can then remove the old one and attach the new one. There appears to be a small spring/tab mechanism that you prize away and then the old strut can be pulled off of the round studs its attached to at each end.

Thanks,

Chris

Here is a good video showing how to remove a trunk strut. It's on a different car but the procedure is the same.

Thanks,

Chris
