Default 2005 Jaguar x350 3L diff rebuild

Hi everyone
My Jag x350 rear diff started whining at 60Km and unfortunately no one is willing to refurbish the diff. The replacement parts have been discontinued and no technical info available.

Is there someone who could assist me with bearing sizes and possible availability? The rear wheel bearings are available in South Africa but not the rest.

Thanks

Also busy with my XJS 1983 project

Regards

Isn't there a newer S Type diff that fits?

I know answering a question with a question doesn't help.

As an aside, my diff starting whining and I just topped it up with oil and it stopped. I have a small leak, so now top it off every couple of months and all is well. I spoke to a knowledgeable jag mechanic in Dallas who said it should last the lifetime of the car if I just keep topping up the oil.

Hi 1964jaguar420,

It would be a great idea to check the diff fluid level as trosty suggests. Your problem may just be a leaking drain plug or gasket.

As far as the bearings go, Timken is a long-term Jaguar bearing OEM and they show the differential and rear wheel bearings still available. Just search your 2005 Jaguar XJ8 here:

Timken Online Parts Catalog

Our forum sponsors such as Coventry West, SNG Barratt and Jagbits can probably get the bearings for you, or you can order Timken bearings by part number from most industrial supply houses (SKF and Koyo are also Jaguar OEMs that may carry equivalent parts).

Checking the Electronic Parts Catalog and jaguarmerriamparts.com, it appears that the oil seals are still available from Jaguar.

It's usually not difficult to determine where the noise is originating by using a mechanic's stethoscope, but you need to raise both rear wheels and carefully chock the front wheels, then start the engine and carefully put the transmission in drive. Laying alongside the car, use the stethoscope to listen for noise at the wheel bearings, diff output shaft bearings and pinion bearings. The source of the noise will usually be very evident.

Cheers,

Don

Default 2005 Jagaur 3L x350 diff rebuild

Thanks everyone, specially Don
The oil level was correct, is it so that the Jaguar v6 x350 and the v8 x350 using the differential bearings and seals accept the ratio differences. Please comment.

Thanks again

Yes bearings and seals are the same, only the ratio is different.

EDIT

There are a couple of other things you can do here...

1. The 3.0L V6 Automatic S-Type from 2002.5MY up to late 2006 is the exact same diff with 3.31:1 ratio, bolts straight in
2. The earlier S-Type auto's (both V8 and V6) have the same ratio, and although different, can bolt straight in if you swap the driveshafts too
3. There is a complete retrofit kit to fit the newer GKN diff into your car, but it costs $$$$'s.... (search TSB JTB00175)

Some info here https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/j...ntials-134733/

And some info about the bearings, seals, etc. here https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...arings-102296/

Dear Don
I took my Jag xj6 x350 2005 to the workshop with the recommended Diff bearings same as XJ8 2005 model, no match. Only oil seals bought fro Jaguar match.
They removed the bearings and then we could do proper measurements. Luckily we found all the bearing accept the front pinion bearing. Now I am looking for the correct Part number for both pinion bearings and races. The Timken catalogue is not helpful.
I will appreciate any assistance

Hi Late summer,

That's a real bummer. So you're saying that you ordered bearings based on the Timken catalog's listings but they are not the correct size, and that you have been able to find output bearing sets based on their measured dimensions but have not been able to find pinion bearing sets?

I checked the Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog again and it does not show any bearings available through Jaguar (just the pinion and output shaft oil seals you already have).

Other Jaguar bearing OEMs are SKF and Koyo, so you could check their catalogs. They're in the same top-quality tier as Timken. SKF supplies the Ferrari F1 racing team and the jet engine divisions of Rolls Royce and Pratt & Whitney. Koyo is part-owned by Toyota but they serve many of the other leading automakers in the world.

Here's are two of the catalogs available online but if you don't see what you're looking for try some of the other catalogs online:

SKF:

Koyo:
http://www.koyo.com.br/upload/koyo/c...20Bearings.pdf

Please keep us informed.

Don
