Default 2005 XJR Gearbox playing up.

Happened a couple of days ago.Had a German sloth in front of me and I wanted to get a shift on when he moved over.Pressed throttle to get kick down to come in.Engine picks up ok as usual but I get no forward motion.Almost like the clutch is slipping and I can hear a rattle from the gearbox area.I have had a look around on the net and it seems to me possibly a torque converter on its last legs. Can these be rebuilt. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Yours worried for my wallet

Steve.

Does the Jag drive normally except for kick down?
Any dash message or lights?
Have car scanned for codes.

Obviously it might be the trans (low on fluid, worn item, whatever).

It co-operates with - as in relies on - the PCM (engine computer) which in turn relies on all those pesky sensors etc including air filter, fuel filter, pump, etc - even the battery being excellent (it fires the coils, or fails to do it properly).

It's hard for the car to flag codes at WOT (it was tough for it to do WOT control at all back in 2005).

So... sadly you may need to do rather thorough checks on the engine as well as gear box.

Thanks for your reply I understand what you are saying. I've spoken to my local transmission shop and when I can get it booked in they are going to do a diagnostic check on it for me.

Well it turns out no problem with the gearbox good news. However it now transpires on acceleration and the engine at around 2500 rpm to 3000 rpm their is a knocking noise and the car still does not accelerate properly. The engine will rev up to the limiter when in neutral. No codes or messages on the dash. I"ve had a quick look in the engine bay nothing seems to be amiss. At a bit of a loss now. Will get car out tomorrow and see what I can determine.

Well something sweet to think about if the diagnosis turns out a bit sour.
Best of luck to you, hoping the answer is an easy fix, the best kind to find.
Hope for the best, expect the worst, never be disappointed.
