Default Broken off col packs

Can the valve covers on a 4.0 be removed without taking out the spark plugs? I have two coil packs that are broken in half and I can' t get them out.Any ideas?

The X350 does not use the old 4.0 liter engine.
You are likely in the wrong forum.

Sorry, maybe it's a 4.2, no matter it is a 2004 all aluminum body sedan.

I have tried those, I cut groves in a spark plug socket,I have tried coat hangers, picks etc. Nothing seams to make half of the coil packs come out.If it was just a rubber boot I think it would have come out but this is half the length of the coil pack.I have yet to have a response advising if the valve cover will come off with out them being removed? I am afraid of damaging the plastic valve cover.Seems like an easy question if you have ever removed one so I guess I will just have to try for myself and let everyone know the answer.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

I have tried needle nose, a spark plug socket with groves cut in it to tear up the rest of the coil pack.I have tried picks etc.If it was just a rubber boot that would be no problem, but it is half of the coil pack! In two cylinders.I have tried a hamer and a punch to break it up but I can only see the center of the spark plug so far, after 2days I am at my wits end on removing them so I can replace the spark plugs.

This is the two broken coil packs. As you can see there is still half of them stuck in the engine

I was thinking that if the valve cover can be removed without taking out the spark plugs,, maybe That would give me enough access to remove the rest of the coil packs. But I have yet to find any info.Every post about valve cover removal doesn't mentIon the spark plugs having to be removed. I guess I will have to answer this question myself by tiring to remove it.Wish me luck!

The cam covers have nothing to do with the spark plugs. The plugs are down in the head and the cam cover sits on top.

I'd rig up a deep hole saw with a plastic sleeve or a couple plastic rings to help center it. I might even try bending some of the teeth inward and/or outward. Put it on a drill in reverse and try to break up/off the remaining portion of the COP. All you need to do is break off enough so that a socket will fit over the spark plug.

Default Successful!

Well after 3 1/2 days I finally have some success. I was able to take a 5/8 hole saw bit on a drill and a chisel, hamer and a lot of cursing. This car has been sitting since October 2015, first I replaced the old gas, scanned it after replacing the plugs and two coil packs it still runs a little rough but before I could drive it, the thermostat housing started to leak, great. So I have placed another order for parts and will be giving it another in a couple of weeks. Thanks for all the encouragement and knowledge, you all a e a blessing ! Thank you again everyone!

Tastes good don't it? Success always tastes better, after failing at your first try or two.
