DSC Not available
Good Morning, I have a 2006 XJ8.
A few weeks ago, I had the dreaded DSC not available message appear on my dashboard. Nothing unusual about the performance, just the error message. I took it in to my dealer and they performed a diagnostic check on it. They told me that they suspected that it was the Yaw sensor in the steering wheel. They replaced it and the error still would not clear. They then replaced the wiring in between the module and the sensor. Still the same problem. They then mentioned that it was a bad module.
They quoted me $4,700 for a new module (of course, I am not going to pay that), but they also quoted me $500 for a used module that they could replace it with.
I told them to go ahead with the replacement, but now they are telling me that they could not get the old one to work because the VIN is hard coded into the module so they will not work with another vehicle. Now they have quoted me the new module again for $4,700 or they can try to repair the module. They said that they have never fixed a module with this sort of problem as it has a Canned Bus Error.
Does anyone know if this sounds correct? I have no reason not to trust the Dealership, I am just really nervous about my baby
. I do intend on keeping this car for a while, so the error really doesn't concern me too much. If it is between that and paying $4,700, I can live with the error. Of course, if I come to sell it, there is no way anyone would want to buy it with that error. I know that I wouldn't.
Any help or advice that anyone could give me on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much

They are playing Parts Department roulette with your $$$.
It may end up needing a module but sensor and harness faults are far more common than module failures.
I'd get a scan tool on it and see exactly what codes are stored or pending. You need a tool that can read Cxxxx (Chassis) codes and not just a basic code reader.

I've had the same "DSC Not Available" message for more than a year and I merely chalked it up as a British car idiosyncrasy like the Check Engine light on other cars.
Just ignore it.

I had this once in Germany on holiday in 2011. It then disappeared and has not reappeared. I asked my local indie to look and the fault code showed an error with something in the brake booster, some stupid £10 switch you can't buy separately so have to replace the whole booster. As the fault has not recurred, I decided it was not worth the money to fix.
I mean, how often do you really need DSC ? I drive like a 68-year old does, i.e. carefully, so don't need the car rescuing me from my follies !!

You are well advised to purchase your own Mongoose cable and run SDD for yourself.
If you find no codes (the ******* may have cleared them) you ar ebest to run the scan after the codes occur again

I just purchased the SDD software and cable from British Diagnostics on ebay. Works perfectly and worth the money. My car has the no abs/trac/cruise fault - bad wheel speed sensor. The software confirmed it and also let me reprogram that blasted mirror autodip in reverse, to no dip. Worth the money. An hour of dealer time would have cost me the same.

The SDD user manual and VMplayer manuals are available if you need them. I'll try to attach them. Seems it won't let me attach the SDD. I'll try to find the link. Ok, the VMplayer is attached. The SDD software is loaded in XP and runs in the VMware Player. Took me awhile to wrap my head around starting it and stopping it. The JLR software comes on 2 discs. Just follow the instructions and it works as advertised. I'll look for the SDD manual link.

Here is the link to the JLR SDD software manual. Read it a couple of times before you start. The software isn't completely intuitive. I learned to program my mirror module on the first run and let it scan everything to build a profile. My second time out I was able to figure out how to pull codes. Good stuff. Good luck with it.

Thank you to you all for the responses and advice. The dealer finally called again today. They had had the vehicle for 3 months, which didn't bother me too much as they had given me a free loaner. Two weeks ago, they told me that they had found the problem to be a resistor in the module, which they replaced and the problem went away. They then said that a new error code came up which told them that the Yaw sensor in the steering wheel was bad. Once they replaced that, the original error came back on the module and they have been unable to clear it.
I guess I just have to live with the error code on the dash. not allowing me to see my trip computer. Is there any way to turn the code off after you have started the vehicle? Thanks again

Got this back over the weekend. Still drives perfect but still has the code. The good thing is that the dealer didn't charge a penny for all of the work they did.
Worst thing is, I got the car back on Saturday and had to winterize it Sunday ready for the Snownami today

I had this DSC fault twice, in Germany of all places, and it disappeared. My local indie told me it could be a little switch in the brake booster playing up. Only cure is to replace the booster as the switch is not supplied separately. Mind you, I expect that switch is available somewhere, it's just Jaguar won't supply it !
FWIW: I also started to get a "DSC not available' message come up on initial start up from a couple of weeks back. I asked the question on the forum and got a response to check my battery. I plugged it in to a charger/tender overnight and I no longer get the message. Could you have a similar problem with the battery leading to the message..? Just speculatin'...
