Default Fuel guage reads empty when full

The car has been standing for a few days in very heavy rain. Full fuel tank, car starts perfectly as always but fuel gauge reads empty and low fuel light is on. Can anyone suggest likely faults and checklist. Car is a 2004 XJ8 and the light of my life (after the wife of course)

I too have an intermittent loss of fuel level reading, at the gauge, on my 04 XJ8.
I suspect it's the wire connection at the fuel pump, under the rear seat.
If so, it should be easy an easy fix, after the rear seat is removed.
Take the wire loose, clean the connection if dirty, then plug it back in.
But seeing as it's intermittent, as well knowing the tank has fuel in it.
It's one of several things that i need to look at, one of these days.

Many thanks Bob - very useful info. I plan to put my OBD reader on this afternoon to see if anything shows up there. With a bit of luck all may be OK now she has dried out a bit but not holding my breath

Hmmmmm…..all is well again. Its the only time I have seen this error in the year I have owned the car so I reckon I can breathe safe until it happens again - if it does. Hopefully, the problem isn't something that will leave me stranded

Some years ago I had a fuel gauge that would occasionally show empty, I put up with it for some time but it gradually got more often until eventually is ws nearly every journey.
It was the sender unit in the tank, there is a single sender in the regular cars but two senders in the super charged cars.
Once fitted the problem never returned.

Question;
Will a Ford Crown Vic fuel pump fit our XJ8's?
Seems i read they do, if so just put a new one in if not too expensive.
After all the car has over 100,000 miles.
Then it should be set for another 100,000 miles.

Probably corrosion on the sender contacts or maybe the sender won't float.

Corrosion was my thoughts, that would be easy enough after pulling the rear seat.
But depending on the cost of a new one, replacement while there, comes to my mind.
