Angry Gearbox problem - auto

2005 X350 3.0 V6 60,000 miles
Just acquired and has fault that it frequently holds too long in first gear from rest.
Was suggested I disconnect battery to reset the memory but no better. I have been told I need to have the gearbox software re-flashed.
Any comments or ideas please
Martin

Very possible, some of the real tech gurus will jump in shortly no doubt

Unless its been done, an oil / filter change for the transmission whilst you're at it might be in order at that mileage......Its NOT sealed for life contrary to what the dealer may tell you.

By all means get more info but consider the above

Good luck

I thought I'd seen a post on this already. Anyway, a TCM re-flash could cure it, and does no harm. Definitely fluid and filter would be beneficial too at that mileage.

Unhappy

Thanks for that - fluid, etc has been changed recently but that did not help the holding in 1st gear - will try the reprogramming I guess

Sorry I'm not sure which box it is but in case you have a Sport button is it selected without it being obvious? (Deselect if so...)

Yes sport button is fitted but selection or not makes no difference

Question X350 gearbox fault

OK still have problem with gearbox frequently holding far too long in 1st gear - blipping the throttle usually forces a change.
Oil has been changed, software reflashed and every thinganyone has suggested has been tried and the fault is still there.
last suggestion was to check engine air intake for leaks which could affect gearbox changes apparently and I did find a split in the flexible hose - replaced with no change to the fault. Car has just been scanned again with no fault codes showing.
From the service record I find that a ABS sensor was replaced last year.
Anyone have any ideas please?? I took it to a local jaguar dealer last year and they returned the vehicle saying no fault found despite me describing the fault in detail - I asked if they thought I was imagining the problem!
Regards
Martin

So the TCM thinks everything is tickety-boo ! That's a good start as it may be something simple and also not serious to the integrity of the gearbox. I assume you haven't got "Sport" mode selected accidentally. It is possible to set this without realising it. The push-switch will illuminate but in strong daylight may not be obvious.

my 2005 xj8l vandy is starting to do this in several gear changes , it also wants to go in and out of overdrive at 70mph. I will need to do the filter/fluid change.

Question

Hi - have checked sport mode and it is not selected. At its worst I can drive the revs up to the max and it will not change out of first gear. When it does occour as soon as I detect it I blip the throttle which nearly always triggers a change out of first but this is really irritating.
My local auto gearbox firm feel the likely cause could be the ABS sensors but no fault shows up - they really doubt it is a actual gearbox fault.
Really do not know where to look next!!

When the fluid was changed, was the sleeve replaced where the TCM socket is located ? This seal starts to leak fluid over time, but the fluid can also interfere with the signals from the ECM and other modules on the car, so if the TCM is not getting a speed input it could affect the change pattern. However no fault code is strange.

My copy of the 2003.5 Technical Notes says the following are input to the TCM via the CANbus
- throttle pedal position
- gear selector position
- engine torque and speed
- transmission fluid temperature
- brake pedal status
- engine oil temperature
- coolant temperature
- wheel speed

This little lot goes through that socket on the gearbox.

Internally the TCM gets transmission input and output speeds. The notes seem to contradict the CAN bus list as further on it says there is a temperature sensor on the valve body, and also a gear position sensor too.

"Really do not know where to look next!!"

Martin where are you in the UK?

You could have a word with Chris in Doncaster at The Jag Specialist - Home

he is highly regarded on the Uk forum.

Also highly recommended are a small auto box specialist in Yorkshire.

Search UK forum for info.

Angry

My local gearbox guy checked the TCM input to the gearbox and all was OK.

I am down in the south - Upminster in Essex

Going in for a service soon to Mercury in Brentwood so will ask them to check everything again

Many thanks

Question X350 gearbox fault

Have been investigating further - I find if I start from rest with the selecter in 2 and if it seems it is going to stick in 1st, I move the selecter to 3 and it will change out of 1st
Also starting off in D if it seems it is going to stick in gear if I move the selector to 5 it will change out of 1st
Does this indicate anything to you experts?

I had something similar but in 2nd and 3rd gears... Turned out to be the valve block

What happens if you drive off in "5" instead if "D". It is not unknown for the selector cable to come loose where it enters the box. Worth a check maybe ?

If it has the ZF box, the two shifter cable bolts on the side of the trans can work loose and even fall out, causing the box to be fooled as to what you've selected.
