Help with my XJ8 2010 crack head from over heating
Hi everyone, I got some bad news about my jag, the engine head has blown its ring, that's my second concern my main question is! What are the options? Buy a second hand or will it be possible to create or repair the engine via a laser cutting engine? Please any ideas that will avoid buying a new XJ 5.0 engine? I am in New Zealand any second-hand engines around? Hope someone can help...

Could you be a bit more forthcoming on what has happened to the engine, please, as I'm not sure I understand how a laser cutting machine can help you. Normally with very bad overheating, (car driven some distance with no coolant), the engine is scrap due to block warping. Replacing with a known good engine is the normal cure, but you might struggle finding one in New Zealand.
Sorry about the lack of details I am meeting with the mechanic tomorrow for a full report and will post it tomorrow. Regarding the laser cutter, I had an idea but have since found that idea to be unachievable and impossible
You've posted in the x350, the prior generation XJ, forum -- you might get more direct experience responses if you repost in the x351 forum. That said, you've described a blown ring and a cracked head, these are different issues. The 5.0 engine is quite complicated, even if the damage is limited to the head (e.g., a burnt ring would be a piston or 'bottom end' versus head issue), experienced x351 enthusiasts (of which I am not) might recommend you swap in an engine. Most of us would consider brand new engines impracticably expensive; find a junk yard / breaker / wrecker in NZ that has a working used 5.0 engine of the same model / trim and that can be swapped in (though check with the x351 forum in case there's necessary actions re: the ECU). I don't know about NZ junk yards, but in the US / Canada we can search for used junk yard parts at www.car-part.com. All else fails, you could have something shipped from America but I have to imagine the shipping would be brutal. Good luck.
most likely block is done too. overheating blows chunks out of the open deck
you can try to pull the head and see if everything is still in one piece. then carry the short block and have them resurface it

Hi Dave,
Sorry to hear of your problem. Where do you have the car at the moment? I am close to Christchurch too, and Clinch Automotive in Sydenham is the only place I would go for this type of job. Shane is excellent, and really knows what to do. I have a friend who overheated the engine in a supercharged F-Type and it has proved to be a very expensive exercise to repair it.

I'd call Jeremy, Jaguar Workshop, 09 236 3715
Alright it's Auckland, but not everything is bad about Auckland...Yet.
Last time I ran a car out of water it went to the dump with a cracked Block. OK it was a Daihatsu Charade so just as well.
